Nickel's Arcade In the Arcade Just as we were walking out of the Farmers and Mechanics bank the other morning-and right here we might stop to say that we are neither a farmer nor a mechanic although we spent a lot of time trying to get the cap of our tooth- paste tube out of the drain once- who should we run into out Claude Fitch on his way to voice lessons in the music school, so naturally we walked down the Arcade with him to hear how he was getting on with his voice. We heard. That's the trouble with music stu- dents-they spend half their time vocalizing and the other half tell- ing you what wonderful results they get. But Clyde is a pretty good sort even if he is a music stu- dent. For one thing he knows how to dress. He said he was going to be late to class that morning just because he insisted on running in- to Van Boven's to ask Bill the price of a suit in the window. We were in a hurry to get down to the Post Office (advt.) to buy one of the new special-delivery stamps (advt.); so we hurried on and left Bill and Cliff going through the suits to- gether. Bob Carson ran into us, of course, coming out of his office. He apologized by saying that he was rushing madly trying to keep track of all the engagements his orchestras are making this spring in addition to rehearsing. Bob really needs a secretary. He needs to be more careful of people, too, for when he'd got out of ear-shot, we discovered he had managed to smashathe crystal of our watch to bits, and so we took it into the jewelers-the Arcade Jewelers, you know-where we de- cided that low as we were right then, financially, we might as well have it cleaned at the same time. We had no sooner got out of the jeweler's door, however, than we caught a glimpse of Chuck popping out of Van Boven's again; so we dashed into the Betsy oss to avoid him and also to buy a bag of that swell English toffee. There we found a couple of women (who don't want to be advt'd in this column and whose names we shall therefore suppress), friends of ours, resplendent in some new hats from Dana Richardson's hat shop, drink- ing cokes . . . . the women were, that is . - . . drinking cokes, we mean . . . . you get it? not the hats. They were only too glad to see us and let us pay the bill under great protest, and then insisted on let- ting us escort them down to the Blue Bird Hair Shoppe where they had appointments for permanents. In front of the Rubley Shop they stopped short before the window and, with little squeals of delight, made for the door, trailing us be- hind them like a kite, a rather em- barrassed kite, too. There we sat, while they tried on half dozen "charming" dresses, staring dis- consolately at our shoes. The more we stared at them, the worse they looked, which finally gave us the brilliant excuse that we had to or- der a pair of shoes across the way at the Murphy Boot Shop, and we got away from them before they had time to wish a second bill on us. No sooner were we outside, though, than we spied our old friend Chet, who had' evidently got side-tracked again, for he was just emerging from Goodhew's Flower shop with a gardenia in his button- hole. That made us pretty good and sore to think we hadn't shaken him yet; so we quick dived into Pat Hart's barber shop and got a shine. We got lured into a hair- cut, too, when one of the barbers, looking at our month's crop, asked us if we were in the Music School. But anyway there's something com- fortable about Pat's barber-chairs, what with a good magazine and all. By the time we got out of there we felt certin of not meeting Clar- ence again and walked with an as- sured step over to the Post Office (see above) for the stamp, but just as we were going in the door, we heard a cheery hail, and turning about, saw him coming out of the Caravan shop where he explained he had been pricing an ash tray for his desk. We suggested gentley and firmly that he might be tardy for his voice lesson, but he brightly responded that he had decided not to go that morning after all, which left us too weak to think up any more excuses; so we walked back to Betsy Ross for a little talk and a MEN'S $14.00 WOMEN'S 12 ALL SIZES IN STOCK BOOTS~- Mr php Boot Shop NICKEL'S ARCADE terns by custom boot Sterling Silver Genuine Stone 9C America's Premier Boot lin resenting the latest styles anc For Mother on Her Day E Rings Settings SUNDAY, MAY 10th t fb ' 1 t" , . h ki t- + , . > ' .
