Before that date Spanish' authors had attempted to follow the literary currents of the rest of Europe. First they wrote of the intense emotions and extraordinary adventures of some Spanish Byron or Manfred. Then, influenced by Sir Walter Scott's historical novel," he said, "they imitated the knightly exploits of some Spanish Ivanhoe or other crusading hero." These themes, however, were too far removed from reality to satisfy Spanish writers in the last third of the nineteenth century, he said, and pointed out that the people had been stirred to consciousness of their own entities by th success- ful revolution of 1868, and now that stability was assured by the coming of a new king, Alfonso XII, they wanted to see in their literature some reflection of this newly acquir- ed importance.
