SUNDAY, APRIL 5, 1931 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE SEV Defeat Meant Only Success to Rockne, Says e oac Rock's Spirit to Inspire Grid Team to Greater Heights. By Hartley (Hunk) 4nderson, Assistant Notre Dame Football Coach. (Copyright, 31, by the Asscited TIs') SOUTH BEND, Ifid., April 4.-(A.P) -As I sit crushed and heartbroken in this lifeless little office where Knute Rockne and I so often map- ped out plans of battles, battles to forge winning football teams and winning men, I wonder if there lives a Notre Dame man who be- lieves the great spirit of our Rock is dead. ie is gone from us, but his spirit lives. And when we line up for fu- ture fights, that spirit will carry us on to new heights.I No, Rockne has many more vic- tories left for old Notre Dame. He will make us win, when we are back to the wall, it will be "do it for' Rock, boys." Such an inspiration cannot be denied. To-a last man, we'll carry on. It wasn't so much strategy, skill and quickness of thinking that cre- ated Knute Rockne; it was because he "knew." He knew life, he knew ambition and failure and success. He had his share of them all, yet, in all he was greater in defeat than success. Defeat was his high road to success. I was with Rock to the depths of failure, to his heights of success as player and as coach almost without interruption since 1918. M.S.C.
