STRAITS ARE ICE BOUND Detroit River and Western Lake Erie Are Free of Ice. (By Associated Press) DETROIT, March 11.-Great lakes harbors generally are open- ing, although most of them st l are ice-bound, and few ice fields are to be seen, according to the ice report issued here by Norman B. Conger, meteorologist for the United States weather bureau. Duluth reported the Superior harbor opening, with an average of 16 inches of ice, but no ice fields visible in the lake. No fields were reported off Keweenaw point, nor from Marquette to Whitefish point, except behind Grand island. Sault Ste. Marie reported 18 inches of ice, with frozen slush on top, in the St. Mary's river. Escanaba Ice Breaking. In Lake Michigan, Escanaba has 15 inches of harbor ice and ice fields breaking up in the middle and lower portions of the bay. Twelve inches of honeycombed har- bor ice was reported by Sturgeon bay, with the upper portion of the bay open and the lower portion open in spots. There are no ice fields along the west shore of the lake nor along the east shore to northnof Charlevoix. At the straits, the ice averages 17 inches in thick- ness, heavily windrowed and in- creasing in ,depth, although ice fields are mostly gone from around Beaver island. In Lake Huron, at Mackinac is- land, the ice is eight inches thick. Cheboygan reported the harbor open, but automobiles crossing on the ice from Point Nipigon to Point Aux Pins report a half mile open channel from Point Nipigon to be- yond Cheboygan. The west shore is free of field ice from Presque Isle to within ten miles of Port Huron, whence ice fields extend to the mouth of the St. Clair river. The eastern shore is free of field ice. Ice from 10 to 12 inches thick is in Saginaw bay, forced in by the wind. St. Clair River Open. The St. Clair river is open to near St. Clair, then is closed to the flats, with a blockade near Rob- ert's Landing. The Detroit river is open. Varying conditions are reported for Lake Erie, with the west end generally open, except for ice a- round the islands, but the east end rather generally closed with field ice. Cleveland has some slush ice in the harbor, as does Sandusky. The ice in the east portion of Lake Erie is soft and honeycombed, averag- ing about four inches in thickness.
