This ive myth will be eral Chinese ma their gaily colored s1ken robes, in- terpreting the story of "The Cow Herd and the Spinning Maid." The legend tells of a spinning maid who was so skillful and dili- gent that the King of Heaven had given her the right to choose her own husband. Following the cus- tom of her people, she threw a flower ball and set the whole hea- ven moving; no star could catch that ball of love. It naturally fell to the cowherd on the other side of the river. After the wedding of' the pair, they played all the time, neglect- ing their duties. Cows ran wild. Finally it became so serious that the King of Heaven had to break the pair and took the girl back to her old home, and ordered that they would be able to see each oth- er only on the seventh day of the seventh month at the seventh hour. This according to the ancient Chinese belief, is the occasion for celebrating as a festival the sev- enth day of the seventh month in China. At that time every year the girls pray to the Spinning Maid, a star up at the east side of the Sil- ver River, for skill in their work, while the boys pray to the cowherd, a star on the west side of the river, for the fulfillment of love. The list of Chinese students who will interpret this myth are Yunice Tsao, Fung Ling Liu, Yen-Wen Mao, Nettle Soohoo, and Maida Kuo.
