IS EXPECTED BACK SOOT' Universiy Professor Dade 1 50( M;.1c Dog Sled Trip Into- Mountain Regions. Larry Gould, of the geology de- partment, now returning from th( Byrd Antarctic expedition, has been secured to give an address to the entering freshman class on the evening of Sept. 25, it was an- nounced yesterday by Prof. Philip E. Bursley, of the romance langu- ages department, who is chairman of the Freshm an week activities, Professor Gould, who is now some- where on the ocean between News Zealand and Panama, will discuss his polar explorations. Answaers 'Radio Request. At the request of Professor Burs- Icy,, Prof. Hobbs, of the geology de- partment, with whom Prof essor Gould~ has travelled considerably in the polar regions, sent a radio gram to the S. S. Eleanor Bolling, one of the two ships in Commander Richard Byrd's expedition, which arrived recently in New Zealand after a two-year sojourn in the Antarctic. Professor Hobbs received the fol- lowing radiogram in reply: "Prof. WV. H. Hobbs, University of Michi- gan, Ann Arbor, Michigan: Glad to speak during freshman week next fall. Was away from Dunedin (New Zealand) few days hence my ap- parent neglect in answering mes- sage. Regards .to all, Larry." The ship bearing Professor Gould and other members of the Byrd expedition is now on its way to Panama. Professor Hobbs 'explained the apparent slowness of the voyage by the fact that Byrd's ships, built for travel in icy seas, were, not es- pecially fast in the water. Gould's most outstanding accom- plishment while in the Antarctic was the 2,500 mile dog sled trip he undertook to study, the geology of the polar mountain ranges. ""' },; ,.,{r:.
