TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 1930 'A "A, -H I G'A N D'A I L Y PACE SEVEN TH~ ICHIAN DILY AO!~117E B MUT IN YEARLING NINE Penn and Drake Relay -Contestants Tie by Comparisons of Marks Set by Each Section at Meets Held Last Saturday t'reshmnan Squad of Seventy to be Reduced to Thirty by Final Cut. GAMES TO BEGIN SOON Out of a squad of over 70 can- elidates who responded to the call for freshman baseball around 30 will make up the team when the final cut has been made. The first year men have been working out on Sougth Ferry field for the past Week, and although the weather was somewhat chilly with .a raw wind blowing across the diamond there has been a large number of candidates reporting every day. Coach Jack Blott has already made his first cut in the person- nel of the squad, and the second one will be announced this after- noon. According to the freshman mentor the cuts are being made rather soon but are necessary in. order to get the squad down to a Nvorkable size, so that he can round a team into shape before the games start. A series of contests with the re-I serve nine and the Physical Edu- cation team has been arranged, the first of which will probably take place the last of this week or the first part of next. Eddie Hamm, Georgia Tech Star Broad Jumper Shatters Penn, Relay Mark. . Experts of the cindered path will have a tougher time this year in their annual comparing of times and distances to reach any drastic conclusions in regard to the relativ.e segregation, of track talent with the tabulation of the results of the Drake and Penn relay marks. A closer total in the way of re-' sults could hardly be amassed. In the tabulation of the 17 events 81 marks fell to the contestants at Des' Moines and eight to the Penn per- formers. In the remaining event a standoff between George Simp- son of Ohio at Philadelphia and Cy Leland of Texas Christian is re- corded. with both runners leading their respective fields to tie the world's record of 9 3-5,seconds. In general it might be held that the Penn athletes held a slight su- periority in the track while the Drake competitors were the better in the field events. The outstand- ing performance at each meet, however, was accomplished by1, a field event man. At Philadelphia Georgia Tech's broad jumper star, Eddie Hamm, shattered the meet record with a leap of 25 feet 4 and 1-4 inches. Tommy Warne furnished the fea- ture at Des Moines in the pole vault. The Northwestern athlete vaulted 13 feet, 11 inches to crack I the meet record and then proceeded to miss by the slightest margin the world's record at 14 feet 2 inches.j iuh I LASIFIE ADYERTI ING NOTICE MORTGAGE LOANS - Money at 6% without bonus to loan on modern Ann Arbor homes.
