SCHEDULE MANY SPORTSI
Spring activities centering,
around the Intramural departmentI
are scheduled to begin immediate-
ly after the vacation period. At
present the three leagues have 1
played off tournaments in several
sports and the various champions I
have been recognized in each.
Ii the inter-fraternity divisioni
Theta Chi is leading for the year
with a total of 919 points. Phi Beta
Delta is second with 803 points, Al-
pha Kappa Lambda third with
737, and Theta Xi fourth with 702.
The Buckeyes headed by Carpenter
are holding the lead in the Inde-
pendent group with Kansas City
(Waters), Bills (Pastoor), and
Olympics (Steinberg), in the next
three places (respectively. The
Junior Engineers (Zanoff) have a
fair lead over the other teams iii
the inter-class league with the
Junior Dents (Collins), the Senior
Lits (Kaufmann), and the Senior
Dents (Moss) following in that or-
der.
Softball to Begin.
Fraternity softball will begin
April 24. Twenty-nine teams have
already entered this event and a
large number of others are, expect-
ed before the beginning of the
schedule. Phi Sigma Delta were the
champions last year with Sigma
Pi as runners-up. The Indepen-
dents are also anticipating the
opeeing of :their softball season,
May 1. The Lawyers Club team were
the winners in this event last sea-
son and the Rockets finished see-
and,.
April 23 will see the opening of
the schedule for the fraternity ten-
nis teams with 26 houses already
entered. Tennis is a new sport on
the Independent calendar this year
and as yet only three teams have
signified their intention of partici-
pgating. Chi Psi won the inter-fra-
ternity tennis honors last year, de-
feating Theta Chi who came sec-
ond.
H ~ orseshoes Popular.
Horseshoes is also becoming a'
popular sport among the frater-
iiities with 23 houses having teams
entered in the tournament thus
far. In the competition last year

Delta Upsilon walked away with
the title and second honors went
to Delta Sigma Phi. This is being
incorporated into the Independents
program as another new event, and
four teams have placed their'
names on the list of entries. Six!
fraternity teams have also on the
entry list for the Sigma Delta Psi,:I
honorary athletic fraternity,tcom
petition.
Interclass competition will also
begin after vacation with the class,
teams playing regulation baseball,I
tennis, and horseshoes. The faculty;
teams are scheduled to participate
in tournaments in tennis, golf, rifle
shooting, and softball.
In addition, an all-frosh tennis
tournament will begin April 23. All-I
campus tourneys will be held in
horseshoes, tennis, archery, rifle
shooting, and golf.
Higgins Will ReplaceI
Bedzek as Penn Coach
Hugo Bezdek, famed football
mentor at Penn State is to relin-
quish all his coaching capacities at
the end of this year's Spring train-
ing to Bob Higgins, the red headed
Irishman who has been his assist-
ant and is also a famous State star.
The passing 'of Bezdek marks an-
other nationally noted gridiron fig-
ure leaving active circles. Hugo
was to Penn State as Yost is to
Michigan, and although he will not
spend any time coaching, he will
be active in the athletic business
of the school for the present.
Bezdek's successor is 'known as
one of the trickiest and shiftiest of
Penn State's gridiron hall of fame.
He has been a student of the Bez-
dek system for several years and
his choice was a unanimous affair.
Higgins' real glory came in the
annual Turkey day game between
State and Pittsburgh. It all hop-
pened way back in 1919 and marks
the last time Penn State beat Pitt.
The forward pass was quite a new
thing and was not used to a great
extent by many teams at that date.
Higgins put the pass on the map
by calling for one on his 5 yard]
line and ran the remaining 95 for
the touchdown.
