SDuring the last school year the
Board in Control of Athletics at
the University of Michigan award-
ed a total of 119 "M's" to members
of Varsity athletic squads. In addi-
tion to these coveted Varsity awards
there were 83 "AMA's" and 197
class numerals given out to ath-
letes.
The number of awards varies
from year to year, but last sea-
son's totals are considered as rep-
resentative figures. ut of the 119
"M's" there were 64 major letters
and 55 minor letters won by mem-
bers of the football, ,basketball,
baseball, and track squads.
Football leads.
The gridiron sport leads all oth-
,ers ti number of major awards, 24
men having been rewardhd for their
services during the season with a
large block "M". Eleven major let-
ters were given out to members of
the Varsity cage squad. This, how-
even, was an unusually large -num-
ber of letters for the basketball
squad to receive, their being only
eight men receivinmg the award this
year. The Wolverine tracksters
stand high -on the list with a total
of 16 major "M's" being presented
to members of the cinderpath team.
Baseball accounted for the remain-
der of the large "M's", with 13 -dia-
mond performers winning the
award.
Minor "M's" were distributed
quite evenly among the remaining
sports, -with the exception of swim-
ming in which case there were 15
letter winners. There -were nine
I small "M's" given to wrestlers,
seven to hockey players, seven' to
tennis players, six to golfers, six
to cross country men, and five to
'fencers.
Give Many "AMA's".
- "AMA" awards are given to the
Varsity men who show ability in
their fie'ld of sport, but do not play
enough to be considered for the
Iblock "M". They are also given as
) awards to members of the Junior
" Varsity and "B" teams. Last year
there were 82 of these "AMA's" won
by 'Michigan athletes. Again foot-
ball heads the list with 23 "AMA's",
