Ticket sales for the Spring con- cert of the Glee Club which will be given Wednesday night, April 2, in Hill Auditorium, opened yester- day at all the book stores, the Un- ion desk, the Women's League building, the School of Music, and Lane Hall. All seats for this an- nual concert are priced at 50 cents.j Glee Club concerts and programs have come to be a traditional af- fair through long adherence to the] same customs. The concert is al- ways opened with "Laudes Atque Carmina," by Stanley. This num- ber is followed by "The Victors"I and "Varsity." Programs are al- ways concluded with "The Yellowl and Blue." To Sing Michigan Songs. The club sings Michigan songs,I official songs of the University and! the unofficial songs of the Opera and the various classes, through which they convey the spirit of Michigan. Every program includes three or four of the compositions of Earl Moore, the musical direc-, tor of the School of Music. Several times during the year,I the organization turns romantic and after a rehearsal journeys fprth to provide a few merry min- utes beneath the windows of a dor- mitory or sorority. One of the big- gest attractions on these serenades are the lunches that are proferred by the "Les Amoreuses" of the campus. Many Lauditory Notes Received. Typical of the lauditory notes re-4 ceived after a broadcast is the fol--! lowing received from an enthusi- astic graduate: "In ecstasy I dug out the old "M" pipe, loaded it, fired. up, and enraptured, hung with you through the last strains of "The Yellow and Blue." In a trice you carried me back to State Street, Ferry Field, Joe's....... Thanks. It was a ,treat." Tomorrow night the organization is planning to appear in Highland Park in the McGregor auditorium and under the auspices of the Highland Park Musical club. This will be the "Men's Night" of the club and a reception will follow the concert. Four Countries Plan Attempts to Wrest Speed Record From Germany. MANY ADMIRE EUROPA (\y Associated Press) NEW YORK; March 26 - The greatest shipbuilding race in his- tory, in which four nations will at- tempt to wrest from Germany the honor of having the fastest steam- ship afloat, was forseen today. Germany's hold on the mythical blue ribbon of the Atlantic was firmly clinched Tuesday when the new North German Lloyd liner Europa established a record of 4 days, 17 hours and 6 minutes from Cherbourg breakwater to Ambrose channel lightship, enitrance of New York harbor, bettering by 18 min- utes the former record established by her sister ship, the Bremen. However, ever since the Bremen took the speed championship from the Cunard liner Mauretania last July plans have been under way in Great Britain, France, Italy, and the United States to build ships in the hope of carrying off the speed championship. The United States lines already have submitted plans for two su- per-liners capable of maintaining an average speed of 28 1-2 knots. Both ships will cost about $30,000,- 000 each. In Great Britain, the Cunard line has completed plans for a ship of approximately 60,000 tons. In France, construction of a super- ship by the Freneh lime awaits only, enlarging of the St. Nazaire ship- yard, while in Italy both the Navi- gazione Generale Italiana and the' Lloyd Sabaudo have plans prepar-1 ed for ships designed to make a . speed of 28 1-2 knots. The Europa's average speed for: her record run was 27.91 knots, but l for several hours she reached a top; speed of 29.01 knots. She is of 48,-I 746 tons. The Bremen is 51,656 tons. Although Capt. Nicolaus Johnsen; declined to confirm predictions that the ship in calmer weather would; be able to average 30 knots, he ad-' mitted he thought she would be! able to do better than her present record. One of the senior engineers said she would not attempt to make a better average than 28.5 knots un- til the appearance of a competitor should make a faster speed neces- sary. This, he predicted, would not be for at least four years. Capt. Johnsen, who made his first Isea trip as a mess boy of 16on a 500-ton bark around Cape Horn. expressed satisfaction over the per- formance of his ship but received all congratulations calmlya I "I had no intention of making a: record," he said. "The Europa just walked away with it."
