University Professor to Discuss
Archeology in Greece Since
War of Independence.'
WILL MEET IN DETROIT
Prof. Benjamin Dean Meritt, of
the Latin and G'reek department,
will speak today in* Detroit, under
the auspices of the Greek-Ampri-
can Progressive association, giving
a discussion of "Archeology in
Greece since the War of Indepen-
dence." The gathering, to be held
at Hotel Tuller, will celebrate the.
centennial of the independence of
Greece, and will be a part of a
world-wide observance of this na-
tional Greek holiday.
In discussing the significance of
the date, Professor Meritt declared,
"March 25, to the Greek world, cor-
responds to our Fourth of July In-
sofar as it is a holiday of inde-
pendence. And this year, in par-
ticular, the hundredth anniversary,
is being celebrated not only by a
series of festivities in Greece, last-
ing over a period of months, but by
Greeks throughout the world."
Professor Meritt, who will give
the discussion partly in Greek and

the fact that archeological explor-
ation, on any extensive scale, has
been possible in Greece only since
Greece obtained her national free-
dom. The lecture is also planned
to include a brief tracing of valu-
able work done within the last 100
years, with indications of the part
that American scholars have had
in archeological discovery.
