These two games were the only ones scheduled in the Conference for the first part of this week. This was indicated today as Dr. Lotus D. Coffman, president of the university, began looking over the list of likely candidates to succeed Dr. Clarence W. Spears, who on Saturday signed as head football coach at the University of Oregon. Dr. Spears returned today to pre- sent his formal resignation as Gopher gridiron mentor, a post he had held for five years. He ex- pressed himself as well pleased with his new. job, which will pay a sal- ary of $11,500 annually. No individual has yet been agreed upon as Spear's successor at Min- nesota by Dr. Coffman and, the sen- ate committee on intercollegiate athletics, the ruling body of sports at the Gopher school, which is anxious to have one selected this week.
