While most of the bouts were close, the Varsity showed a marked im- provement over its performance in a previous meet with the fresh- men. Perhaps the closest bouts were in the events in which both the Varsity and the freshmen fencers were almost over-cautious. Koon turned in the best performance for thWe Varsity by defeating both Bus- sey and Richard by two to one scores, while Dwosett, the other Varsity man competing in this Weapon, won his bout from Bussey, 2o 0, and dropped one to Richard, 2 to 1. Hammer and Gordn 'Win. Although all of the bouts in the sabre were closely contended Ham- mer and Gordon of the Varsity each .won two bouts *from Ide and Destephano. Destephano gave the Varsity fencers some real com- petition and forced the regulars to extend themselves to win. In the bout, the freshman threatened to 'bout into a f-our to four tie before Gordon could rally and take the final and deciding point. Destephona was slightly less ef- fective against Hammer who won the bout 5 to 3. Neither of the Var- sity men had much trouble with Ide who lost to Hammer, 5 to 2, and to ^Gordon, 5 to 1. The latter bout was exceedingly fast with Gordon having things pretty much his oWn wa. MIrley IsBest Freshman. The three Varsity representatives in the foils, Stolpman, Schutz, and Friedman, were pushed by the freshmen only in the first round in which Schutz defeated McKlos- ky, 5 to 3, Friedman defeated Moulton, 5 to 4, and Stolpman de- feated Morley, 5 to 4. Marley was the strongest opponent of the Var- sity in this weapon, winning two of his three bouts.! in the second round, Stolpman and Friedman both defeated their freshmen opponents, Moulton and McKlosky respectively, by 5 to 0 scores. Morley won his first bout from Schutz in a close 5 to 3 bout. In the third series of foils bouts Stolpman won his third victory from McKlosky 5 to 3. Penn State Grid Coach Will Become Director (By Associated Press) HARRISBURGi Pa., Jan. 21.-Re- tire ment of Hugo Bezdek from ac- tive coaching of Penn State's foot- ball and baseball teams to assume directorship of a new school of ed- ucation and athletics at the col- lege was approved today by the col- lege board of trustees.: Bezdek's dropping out of the coaching position was voluntary, the board announced. The grizzled veteran, with two more years to his coaching contract, stepped out. in order to be better able to per- form -his new duties. Both changes are effective July 1. In his new position, Bezdek will have a voice in the selection of his successor as coach, giving him power to pick some one who may retain the system in vogue at Penn State for the last 12 years.
