SQUAD IN GOOD SHAPE With one victory and one defeat chalked up against them in their two Conference games thus far, the Michigan Junior Varsity willi meet the Illinois "B" team this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock on Ferry field in what promises to be the hardest fought game that the Michigan men have faced this year. Illinois, conquerors of Wiscon- sin's "B" team which in turn de- feated the Wolverines in their first Big Ten game of the season, brings a strong aggregation that is further strengthened by the addi- tion of several men from the Var- sity squad. The Illini reserves trounced Wisconsin, 12-0, after the fadgers had taken Michigan into camp, 6-0. Wolves' Lineup Altered. Michigan will present a greatly' altered lineup from that which faced the Ohio State seconds last1 week. In spite of the fact tit the1 Wolverines thoroughly trounced the Buckeyes, Coach Courright has announced that three changes will be made in the line and two in the backfield for today's contest. Blaine is scheduled to appear at left tackle instead of Morgan, Decker will start at left guard in place of Kaminski, either Morga or'Richardson will take over Benz' position at right guard, Miller will be shifted to a halfback position in place of Pearlman, and Ber- kowitz will take Miller's place at the vacated fullback post. Brown In Backfield. Brown is a lineman that neces- sarily must be shifted to the back- field to take the place of Jennings McBride. His presence in the backfield will assure the Wolver- ines of a speedy attack, probably built around Widman. Widman is a real triple threat performer, being a capable kicker and passer as well as an able ball carrier. His kicking ability is com- parable with that of the men wno do the booting for the Varsity. Berkowitz, at full, is also a capable performer. Michigan will enter the game in the best of condition, only a few! minor injuries having been incur- red throughout the week. If the Illini reserves prove tough to score a touchdown against, it is probable that victory for Michi- gan will depend on the toe of Bauer, veteran tackle and captain of the team. His trusty place kicking ability gave the "B" team a field goal and two points after touchdowns in the Ohio game last week, and very likely he will be called on this afternoon to gain Michigan some points by place kicking. While the Michigan Junior Var- sity looked very good in last week's contest,. the Ohio State team was a far cry from the squad that Ili- nois will trot out upon the ficid this afternoon. The Illini can al- ways be counted on to furnish stiff opposition, and this team is no ex- Illini Strengthened. Edson of StormI Lake, fullback on that team, has come forward with an eplanatioi. Edson is one of the gridiron veter- ans who will attend team reunions' at the Hawkeye homecoming Sat- urday. After a week of training near Detroit, the team which later was to share the conference titlc tool the fied against the formidable University of Michigan eleven. The Wolverines, Edson relates,: had been coached to break up the famous "guardsback" formation,. part of- the Pennsylvania system used by Dr. A. A. Knipe, Iowa coach. So'the foxy doctor evolved a formation which brought one tackle behind the line. It was a mystifying shift from the usual style of attack. Iowa's left tackle was Joe War- ner, and it was hekwho was dele- gated to fall back, Edson says. Shortly after the initial kick-off, Iowa obtained possession of the ball. Clyde Williams, all-western quar-, terback, raised his voice in a lusty 'call, "Joe back." Out of the line came Warner, and the repeated launching of the play sent the Hawkeye legions through the baffled Wolverines for an easy 28 to 5 victory. Newspaper men thought that Williams called "whoa-back" and heralded the astounding new play by that name. Williams, the quar- terback, now is a Sheldon automo- tile dealer, and the much-discuss- ed Joe is a realtor of Santa Anna, Cal. MICHIGAN DIAMOND TEAM ATTRACTS MORE PEOPLE IN JAPAN THAN HERE which is expected when they meet the University of' Iowa cross country team here today: Thorn ic d na nn-4nn cvi th College baseball in Japan finds much more interest in the minds of the fans than it does in the United States, according to Harvey Straub, captain-elect of next year's baseballw tteam.Several incidents of this were cited by Straub, whol claimed that more people turned out to watch the Michigan team practice there than turn out for the games here. On one occasion, he said, when the playing field was located eight miles from town and up the side of a fairly steep mountain, several1 thousand people walked /all of the eight miles up the hill to witness the contest. Only one change was made in the lineup of the Wolverines while on the trip. Reichman, who was ex- pected to assume the regular catch- ing burderwith Joe Truskowski re- maining at home, was ousted from his position by Centenni, who prior; JOHNSTONE TO DEVELOP MICHIGAN SOCCER TEAMS Soccer is becoming a popular game in many of the mid-western i schools and colleges, according to John Johnstone of the Intramural Sports department. If such is the case, the In- dians will be a hard team to stop. Illinois' backfield will be made up of Useman at quarter, Etnyre and Hall, at the halfback posts, and Schultz, at full.
