*nAY,. -SPTEMBER 24, .1920' -THE MMCI- TA 1 D)AILY ?*Ad CH Tm ,. . C . r TWO THEATERS HAVE NEW SOUND SYSTEM Inaugurating a new era in cam- pus entertainment, both the Michi- gan theater and the older Majestic, once the beauty spot of Ann Ar- bbr's show business, have been equipped for "talking movies." The :Michigan theater is now using the Western Electric sound system which utilizes the Vitaphone and Movietone talking pictures. More than $78,000 worth of equipment has been installed in the Michi- gan alone this past summer. .Although the theater, under the .management of Gerald Hoag, has been running a straight sound pro- gram all during the summer mlonths, stage presentations se- cured through Radio Keith Or- pjheum affiliations have recently been added to the programs pre- sented by the Butterfield Thea-" ters. Something new for the patrons of the Michigan is the per- manent placing of a syncopating house orchestra to be known as the Michigan Melodists. This group will be so organized that they may work either on the stage or in the pit, as the occasion demands or warrants. The stage equipment has been augmented by the addition of. n6iseless motor-driven properties whiich aid in setting the stage while1 the talking pictures are on the screen. The dressing rooms have been separated from the stage by sound-proof walls which will pre- vent disturbances from that sec- tion. Several electrical effects and spin spots" have been purchased for the stage to be used in effect- ing high-lights on the stage drap- eies during presentations.
