Old Maps Of America Are Being Displayed At Clements Library At present the Clemnents library is devoting its exhibition cases to a display of some old maps of the New World. The exhibit is termed by Doctor R. G. Adams, custodian of the library, "Putting America on the Map." It consists of a number of facsimiles of old maps, most of which are Spanish.- This collection contains maps showing California .as an island and what is now North and South America as two widely separated continents. An exact copy of one of the oldest maps of the world is in this collection. The original of this map was painted on a bull's hide and the comparative knowl- edge of the* Eastern and Western hemispheres is shown clearly by1 the exactness and detail of Europe and Asia and the crudeness of the "terra incognita."
