Starts Preparations

In preparation for a busy sea-
son, Coach Matt Mann has com-
menced working his Varsity swim-
mers in earnest to round them into
condition for the competition that
they must face. The new pool is
prcving, advantageous in that the
team can practice as a group with-
out interference from other swim-
mers.
Coach Mann has the aid of two
able assistants this year, who are
helping him in handling the large ;
squad. Clarence Battle, a three-
letter man, is assisting in coaching
the divers. Batter represented the
Wolverines in fancy diving as well
as being a capable back stroker
and free styler. John MacMahon,
'32Ed, is the other right hand
man. He formerly coached the
Toledo Y. M. C. A. team, so his ex-
perience stands him in good stead.
MacMahon is directing his atten-
tion to the swimmers, correctingI
faults in their style, especiallyj
among the freshmen.
Six free style veterans are avail-
able for use on the relay team and
in the short sprints this season.
Bob Walker, sophomore sensation
of the 1928 team, is being pressed
by Seager, Reif, Ault, and Walaitis,
while Watson may be used in this
event. Hosmer, a junior has also
shown considerable speed, and may
replace one of the lettermen.
Garnet Ault, who swam on the
Canadian Olympic team, is a sure
entry in the 440 yard event, but
who his, teammate will be is still
in doubt. Watson is the most like-
ly candidate, but McCaffree and
Goldsmith have shown promise.
The back stroke is well taken
care of by Captain Spindle, and
Hubbell, bothtformer Big Ten
champions, with the addition of
Boldt, freshman star of last sea-
son. This trio are about as good
s4s any back stroker in the Con-
ference.
Four men are fighting for places
i the breast stroke. Jud Thomp-
son is competing with Hughes, an
AMA winner from 1927, Mertz and
Bebee, members of the 1931 fresh-
man, for a. regular position.
Frank Walaitis can be counted
on to take care of the fancy diving,
but a partner must be found for
him. Nimz, Maxian, and Newman,
sophomore aspirants, are seeking
a berth along with Bailey, AMA
winner, and Grimshaw.
