N'or;n - 1 THE MICHIGAN DflI.N1 SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24 1928 ............. - -- ...... . TO RUN FAVOR T HR EE TEAMS IN1 RACE AT MADISONi Hawkeye, Illini, Hoosier Harriers Mated Highest In Annual Big Ten Meet IOWA HAS 4i*OD RECORDI With Wisconsin, holder of the Conference harrier championship for the last four years, overshad- owed by at east three teams on the basis of advance ratings, the an- nual Big Ten cross-country meet which will be held at Madison this morning appears to have narrowed down to a triangular duel between Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana for first, place and titular honors. The Hawkeyes, with an inexper- ienced team, of sophomores, will start the five mile trek heavy fa- vorites by virtue of their victories over Illinois, Minnesota, and Wis- consin in dual meets. Illinois Strong The Illini harriers, although beaten by Iowa, have shown some strength in dual meets besides win- ning the triangular meet with Michigan and Ohio at Columbus, and will pit a team of veterans, against the Hawkeyes. The Hoos- ier runners also have a good re- cord including an overwhelming defeat of the Badger team in a quadrangular meet with Northwes- tern and Chicago at Evanston. Wisconsin, which has consistent- ly outclassed all competition for the last four years, finds itself in the unenviable position of under- dog, the Badgers having a lone vic- tory over Michigan in an early sea- I son meet to their credit. The Wol- verine squad, which placed a close second to Illlinois and ahead of Ohio in the triangular meet at Columbus after losing to Wiscon- sin, will be handicapped by the' loss of Captain Wuerfel, whose in- jured knee will prevent his com- peting.{ Several Stars Compete The race for individual honors' promises to be close, with Captains Abbott of Illinois, Martin of Pur- due, Abromson of Indiana, and An- derson and North of Minnesota fa- vored. The Illinoi contingent also contains two other individual stars in Novak and Ponzer, who took thirteenth and nineteenth respec- tively in last year's meet. Since the first five finishers in the 1927 race over the Michigan; course will not compete today, sev- eral of the other early finishers are rated highly in the present field.
