made but one threat to score when
a brilliant passing attack brought
the ball to the Cardinal one-foot
line where the Badger line refused
to give way.
Northwestern celebrated its
home-coming in an unexpected
manner by seizing an early lead and
fighting off Minnesota's assults
with a consequent 10 to 9 Wildcat
triumph. A bad pass from center
that forced Holmer to be tackled
behind his goal gave the Gophers
a 2 to 0 advantage early in the
game, but Bill Calderwell soon
brought the Purple rooters to their
feet by picking up a Minnesota
fumble and racing 75 yards to ai
touchdown. Captain Holmer later
booted a field goal that gave North-
western the necessary one-point
margin to offset a Gopher touch-
down in the last quarter.
Iowa and Purdue engaged non-
Conference opponents and won
their games in an easy manner but
without piling up a large score.
South Dakota held Iowa scoreless
for the first quarter but the ap-.
pearance of Oran Pape in the
Hawkeye backfield during the sec-
ond period started the Iowa assult.I
P3ape vaulted into the Big Ten scor-
ing lead by pushing over two touch-
downs that loomed large in the 19
to 0 win.
Purdue also found trouble with
Case during the first half but also
pulled out a 19 to 0 triumph by un-
leasing a vicious assult in the sec-
ond half.
