The backs also were utilized in blocking off would-be tacklers, with Gembis, Wheeler, and Hozer protecting the kicker. Holmes sent some nice spirals down the field, where Straub, McBride and Simrall alternated in catching the ball. Draveling, Orwig, and Boden were given a workout in getting down under punts, the coaches em- phasizing speed among the flank-, men. Squier came in for punish- ment when he broke through the dummy line several times to block the kick. With Simrall doing the punting, Holmes was given an op- portunity to catch the oval. The backfield was made up of Simrall, Dahlem, Gem- bis, and Captain Rich. B Squad Works On Pass On account of his head injury, Pommerening alternated with Poor- man at the left tackle post. Bo- vard, Totzke, and Cornwell were the only players who did not take an active part in the practice. All are recovering from injuries. Mc- Bride replaced Dahlem for a short time during the signal drill. Perfecting a pass defense to be used against the Western State Normal eleven Saturday took up Jnost of the time of the Junior Varsity yesterday. Coaches Court- right and Brown hurled long and short passes to the ends while a backfield composed of Widman, Wilson, Geistert, and Lytel at- tempted to bat them down' or in- tercept the tosses. Earl Martineau is reported to have a strong eleven on the field to represent the Kalamazoo Normal school and the coaches are desirous of sending the Junior- Varsity into the fray in the best shape possible. After the -long drill with the pass, the squad was split up and each man given individual instruction in the fundamentals of the game. The team was not at its full strength yesterday since a number of the players could not attend on account of classes in the Univer- sity. No less than 10 of the men on the present squad were numbered among the Indian g r i d warriors who invaded Ferry field in 1926. These in- clude Capt. Butch Nowack in the line, and Frosty Peters and Cowboy Nichol in the backfield. The other invaders -of two sea- sons ago who did not participate in the contest are Timm and Hick- man, backs, and McClure, Ring- quist, Ongley, Wheeler and Rich- man, line candidates. Of this num- ber Nowack, Timm and Richman are the men who have been playing regularly this year.E Other veteran material from the great team of sophomores who captured the title last year includes Crane, Weitz, Gordon, Jolley, and Deimling, linemen, and IMills, Stussey, Humbert, and Walker, backs. One of the outstanding backs on the Orange and Blue roster is Fritz Humbert, husky substitute of the 1927 team who is showing the way to the other Conference fullbacks this season by holding the lead in Big Ten scoring.l Another notable is Russell Crane, who proved to be one of the real surprises of .last season, . being nominated for all-American honors by Grant- land Rice. The injury sustained by Kes Deiniling, veteran flanker, in the Northwestern game Satur- day will keep him out of the tilt with the Wolverines and Zuppke's search for a capable substitute has apparently re- sulted in the selection of Lewis, a 200 pound sophomore, to fill the gap. Only three of the 11 men who faced the Illini on their own field last year will be in the starting. lineup for the Wolves, Bovard, Pommerening, and Rich being the only regulars available. Del Whittle replaced Louie Gilbert in the Michigan front last fall when the latter was suddenly taken ill just before the game, but Whittle is still suffering from the leg injury that has troubled him all fall and there is little hope of him seeing service. The addition of big Bruce Hul- bert to the right side of the Michi- gan line gives the Wolverines their, heaviest forward wall in years. His1 238 pounds boosts the formerly heavy line to the average of 195 pounds per man, a figure that compares favorably with that of any line in the Middle West.
