THE MICHIGAN DAILY THE-M-H-------L 1928-29 Squad Has Abundance 01 Good Material In Foils, Sabre, And Epee Events NEW MEN SHOW PROMISE Considerably handicapped by the lack of a regular coach, yet giving promise of developing the strong- est team in the history of fencing at Michigan, the varsity fencing squad of 19 men is working out every day at Waterman gymnasiumI under the direction of Captain Wiggers and the occasional and' valuable coaching ,of Bella de tuscon of Detroit. On the squad are four men with one or more years of experience in Varsity competition, two with experience from the University of Chicago, and three promising can- (idates from last year's freshmen squad. None of the ability is con- centrated on any one event but seems to be will distributed among all three, foils, sabre and epee. For their coaching, the candi- dates at present have 'to,:depend entirely upon Coach Tuscon, who1 is able to come from Detroit to Work with the men every Tuesday and Thursday, and what knowledge pf the game the individual mem- ers of the squad may possess. Fencing, which has for years been very popular in the East, has' gradually spreead westward until now nine of the Big Ten schools I have varsity teams in competition. Leading the candidates for a position on the team in the foilst event is Louar, lately of the Univer- sity of Chicago, who has to his predit six years experience in fenc- ing. Schultz is another man from Chicago who 'seems likely to make a strong bid for one of the three positions in this event. Stolpman, a letterman from last year's squad, and Friedman, a promising sophomore from last year's yearling team, are the other two men who seem to be among the first four candidates for foils com- petition. The above four men should form a combination to be feared by any team. The competition for the sabre event is a little less keen withHam- mer, who, took' part in broth the foils and the sabre on the Varsity last year, and Gordon, from the 1928 freshman squad, the men who Intramural Play I THREE CLASS TEAMS SCHEDULED ndere y ain TO MEET IN FOOTBALL TOURNEY (Continued from Page 6) men win the finals it will furnish Three teams, Coach Fisher's starting with the Freshman-Phys- a distinct upset according to the freshman eleven, Coach Keen's ical Education game on Oct. 30. intramural department.
