s10, 198 THE MICHIGAN DAILY ORRELL URNDLAKEI BIBLICAL TRANLQATIONI FROM COPTIC EDITION SEMITICS HEAD TO PUBLISH HIS TRANSLATION IN ENGLISH I COPY IS 1200_YEARS OLD Professor to U s e Photographic ~Plates in Detecting Letters 1 Defaced By Time At the invitation of Prof. James H. Breasted, head of the Oriental Museum of the University of Chi- cago, Prof. W. H. Worrell, of the! University of Michigan Semitics de- partment, is engaged in translat- ing the only complete Coptic edi- tion of the Book of Proverbs in ex- istance. Professor Worrell is studying pho- tographs of the pages in Ann Ar- bor, and will make occasional trips to Chicago to check his findings: with the original manuscript. He will first decipher the Copticz script, and in this work the photo- graphic plates aid him to detect letters which are not otherwise dis- cernible. After the script is deciph- ered, he will correct the errors 'made by the writer, and then will discuss-the peculiarities of the writ- ing with other research workers. This is necessary, Professor Worrell says, because in every manuscript of this kind new words and new g r a m m a t i c a 1 constructions are found. The final interpretation will be made after comparison with other existing Coptic manuscripts. Professor Worrell intends to pub- lish the book in literal English so it can be translated readily into other languages by students of the Bible. Usually, he says, the trans-l lations are not literal but since Coptic is little known he is pursu- ing this plan. The importance of translating Coptic manuscript into Greek and then into Hebrew was emphasized yesterday by Professor Worrell who stated that the Book of Proverbs' translation today is most inaccu- rate. Usually, he says, students of the Bible seek the original Hebrew version through Greek translations of about the third century, but the Greek text of the Book of Proverbs is faulty. This Coptic manuscript, which belongs to the period of the fifth to the seventh century A. D. should reveal some interesting informa- tion, Professor Worrell says. The original manuscript itself is a curious book about five by three inches. It is known as a miniature and comes from the. region around Fiume, Egypt, where other minia- tures have been unearthed. The Book of Proverbs, which is entirely complete in 202 pages, appears to be part of a larger volume. If the complete book was the old testa- ment, which is naturally supposed, it would have had awkward pro- portions."
