JLD SAILS

FOR ANTARCTIC, WASTES

D TWYO YEARS Of GEOLOGIC RESEARCH

ies on the faculty, and
student body anxiously
vs concerning Prof. Law-
Gould of the geology de-
who sailed recently with
Antarctic expedition as
;rapher and geologist:
)edition will assemble in'
and and proceed from;
he Bay of Whales, the ex-
base, 2,300 miles fromj
land. Commander Byrd
t the expedition will have
start work by January 1.
r Gould, who was chosen
applicants for this covet-
)n, will do most of the
for the expedition. He
to chart more complete-
:curately, the 14,000 mile
of Antarctica.

Equipped with the most moderr
of apparatus, Professor Gould was
confident that he would be able to
measure the relative thicknesses
of the ice sheets-which in turn will
enable him to discover much
hitherto unknown concerning the
topography of ,Antarctica.
Although his position is not as
hazardous as some of the fliers,
Professor Gould will. undergo con-
siderable risk. He will probably
make several flights during the
course of his investigations and he
will at all times be exposed to the
terrible climactic conditions that
exist near the South pole. Before
he left, several news agencies re-
quested information concerning
Professor Gould for their obituary
files.
