FEBRUARY 22,-- 1929 %,FIE MICHIGAN DAIL P~EBRUARY 22, 1929' THE MICHIGAN DAILY III WOLVERINE TANK MEN WILL BEGIN STIF DRILL IN PREPARATION FOR NORTHWESTERN Meets With State And Wisconsin Are Only Contests Before Season's Hardest GRAND RAPIDS "Y "EASY Having annexed their fifth' straight victory of the season at the expense of Grand Rapids Y. M. C. A., Michigan's swimmers will be- gin intensive training for the meet with the strong Northwestern ag- gregation, now only two weeks away. - The meet at Grand Rapids. was scarcely more than a workout,; the Wolverines winning easily by a 51-20 score. Wolves Lose One First Every first place with the excep- tion of the fancy diving\ was won by Coach Mann's proteges, while the Grand Rapids team captured only two second places. Mitchell and Stewart both finished ahead of' Bailey in the fancy diving, while Grimshaw was off form, taking fourth. Rose touched out Reif of the Wolverines for a second place in the 40-yard sprint. Michigan had little trouble winning the rest of the events. Next Wednesday Michigan' State will invade the Intramural. build- ing pool for a dual meet, while on Saturday the Wolverines will jour- ney to Madison to compete with Wisconsin in swimming and water polo. These meets will give the Michigan swimmers needed com- petition in preparation for the crucial meet March 8 against Northwesterns' experienced tank- men. Michigan Team Strong The Wolverines appewr to be we'l fortified in the free style with Sea- ger, Walker', Reif, and 0. Gold- smith available for the sprints and Ault a sure place winner in the distance events. Watson ,trd Me- Donald are waging a close battle for a regular berth in the 400-yard swim. Captain Spindle and Hubbell, both former champions, are re- garded among the best back strokers in the country. TIhomp- son and R. Goldsmith can be re- lied upon to make a race interest- ing for competitors in the breast stroke. Mertz also swims this event, but has been devoting his efforts to the quarter mile lately. Fancy diving has been Michigan's greatest weakness in dual meets. Grimshaw and Bailey have been "in and outers" in competition, winning the event only once in five meets, that against Indiana. Northwestern will bring the out- standing collegiate diver in the country, Wallie Colbath, Olympic team member, to test the prowess of the Wolverines on the spring- board. Crews of the eastern colleges are apparently anxious to start spring practice since they are taking tc the water as soon as the melting of the ice will permit. Penn has already made the call for crew candidates and will work out on the Schuykill.
