Spring Grid Activities; Trophy To Be Presented I'] RICH RECEIVES AWARI Spring football activities will be concluded with . a meeting ,;at 7:30 o'clock tonight at the Union of all candidates for the 1929 football squads. Featuring the meeting will be the announcement of the win- ner of the Chicago Alumni Trophy for tpis year. All of the men who turned out for spring practice are eligible for this trophy the basis of whoset award is dependent upon four ma- 'jor qualifications, namely, general improvement during the spring training season, attitude, attend- ance, and prospective value to next fall's Varsity. Awarded to Outstanding Players In past years this award has gone to some of the most outstanding players on Wolverine grid teams. Four years ago Bauer, one of the strongest linemen in recent an- nuals, was given the Chicago tro- phy. The following year Geo. Rich, who was later to captain a Maize and Blue eleven, showed the most promise during the sring season and was given the award. Two4 years ago the honor was bestowed' upon Kip Taylor whose injury the following fall kept him out of the lineup most of the, season. Last year Holmes received the trophy. Check on Attendance Special care is taken during the spring training season to check the attendance. and attitude of the can- didates throughout the whole pe- riod. While these two qualifications are not the most important, they nevertheless figure heavily in the final awarding of the trophy. The other two important qualifications, improvement and prospective value to the Varsity of the following. fall,' go hand in hand and, are the chief factors considered in bestowing this honor. The Chicago Trophy is a full sized. silver football, one of whici is given a Michigan football man each spring. It is given by the Chicago .University of Michigan Alumni as- sociation. KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER FAILS IN ENGLISH RACES KEMPTON, Eng., May 12.-(AP)- For the third time since invading .England, Reigh Count today.,failed to show the class that ranked hin as the United States' leading 3- year-old in 1928. Although the performance of the 1928 Kentucky Derby winner, was disappointing, the colt's. progress is being watched with interest by English turfmnen. With the game at Ohio State' called off because of the rain, Coach Fisher of ; the Wolverine* 'baseball team feels that had his men been able to perform Monday they would have been in the best condition of the year. The team as a. whole has shown, great im- provenment over their form before' the Illinois game, and now the greatest help they can have is to play some games in order to get the players used to competition. Hitting has picked up since last week, but Coach Fisher put the men through another long batting drill again last night so that they* would not lose their eye due to long lay-offs. The pitchers also rounded into better condition, and although they too need games to be at their best, the MichiganI coach feels that his twirlers will turn back most of the teams they have to face. Fred Asbeck will probably "be slated to take the mound when the Wolverines face Northwesteri on the trip thisbweekend, while Bill jMcAfee will be used against Pur- due. Asbeck has not had an op- portunity to pitch in a regular game for two weks, butCoach Fisher fhas been piutting him, through long drills against the Michigan batters so that the big right hander will be able to step into the box and display his best ball. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA -"Get married and make Phi Bete." This seems to be a good motto, for married students at this1 University are receiving better grades than those who prefer to stay single. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA' -Minnesota has the right idea., It has been proposed that a Student Union be built at this University, the construction to be financed by raising the student fees one dol- lar. It is perhaps significant that Edward Payson Weston, famous long distance pedestrian, died re- cently after being struck by a taxi- cab.{ speed and control be had last year, and can be depended upon to give plenty of trouble to the opposing batters for the rest of the year..j In addition, Montague, a junior playing his first year on the Var- sity squad has been showing well lately and may get a chance to break into the regular line-up in one of these games. With two invasions of foreign fields scheduled before the end of the season, and a game with Ohio State scheduled for the final ap-' pearance of the Wolverines in ; Big Ten baseball this year, Michigan .will have -several hard tests of their ability if they are to take an- other Conference title. HELP, TOWOLVERINElS Wisconsin slipped another notch in the -Big Ten baseball standings when it bowed to the in and out Illinois team a0 Madison last Mon- day. As a. result of the Badgers' defeat, Michigan become more firmly entrenched at the head of the conference standings, while Wisconsin, who had been the Wol- verine's 1most dangerous contend- er, slipped back to a tie for second with Indiana and Iowa. In the, only other conference game played Monday, Chicago whitewashed Purdue 9 to 0, send- ing the Boilermakers farther down the chute, and deadlocking them with Ohio State, one step out of the cellar. Chicago rose to fifth place in1 the standings by virtue of its win over Purdue. The Maroons now boast of a record which has passedj the .500 mark for the first time this season. Bower, Illini hurler, turned in a well pitched game to give the Wis- consin title hopes a severe jolt, limiting the Badgers to five hits and drubbing them, 8 to 4. Illinois fell upon the. offerings of Farber, Wisconsin ace, to pound out 12 hits and 8 runs in eight innings, before Ellerman could be rushed into the game to stave bff the, heavy attack of the Illini slug-, gers. The Badgers' support was' poor, the team kicking in with five errors.h, Dorn and Walker, with three hits apiece, led the Illinois batters. 11..
