PAGE TWO THE MICHICA N DAILY FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1929 PROFESSOR REED TRANSLATES BIOGRAPHY OF BELGIAN RULER First copies were received here' recently of Comte Louis de Lich- tevelde's "Leopold of the Belgians," translated by Prof. Thomas H. Reed of the political science de- partment and his son H. Russell Reed. Licht-velde presents the current Belgian view of Leopold II, a king who played a much greater part in worldaffaairs than the importance of his country necessitated and who was subjected to a great deal of adverse criticism for his actions in the Congo. The Belgian ruler was accused of operating the gov- ernment of Congo for his personal gain, but Lichtevelde, who was private secretary to the prime min- ister of Belgium during the World War and had access to all authen- tic documents, reveals the true state of affairs in regard to this and other problems. Prof. A. Nerincx of the Univer- sity of Louvain, former member of the Belgian senate, remarks in his preface: "No one could be better qualified than Professor Reed to present to the American public a translation of this volume. His great knowledge of the political history of Belgium, his acquaint- ance with the life of political par- ties in parliament fit hm to make a judicious translation." "Leopold of the Belgians" was awarded the "crown" in a compe- tition sponsored by the Foundation Empain. SOME FRATERNITY BADGES 1-3 Offd Stop into the store.
