This is the first time that{ the contest has been held in Ann Arbor in the last five years. Ormond J. Drake, '30Ed., will rep- resent the University in the contest; tonight. Drake has been very active in speech activities'on the campus for the last two years, both as a debater, an extemporaneous speaker, and as an orator par ex- cellence. He was a member of the 'Varsity debating team in the Spring of 1928 and also in the Fall of 1928. He was one of the trio who defeat- ed the debate team of Indiana Uni- versity, in a contest in Hill Audi- I torium lastaNovember. Drake was awarded first place in the second extemporaneous contest held on the campus last year.. Fights To Victory Four weeks ago he won the right to represent Michigan in the North- ern Oratorical contest tonight by out-speaking a group of four stu- dents who had survived preliminary trials. The title of Drake's oration' is "Mankind Tomorrow." Competing against Drake will be! the representatives of the other five universities who are members of the Northern Oratorical League. Stanley Trefil, representing North- western University, will speak -on1 "My College Song"; Ruth Scherer of the University of Wisconsin will' deliver her oration entitled, "The Blundering Giant"; Allen Green of Western Reserve University will{ talk on "The Juggernaut of Sci- ence"; "The Un-American X" is the title of Morris Bannister's oration,1 who represents the University of Iowa; and Theodore Gordon of the University of Minnesota will speak on "Watchdogs." Be Brief The orations must not be more than 2,000 words in length, accord- ing to the rules of the contest. The speakers must not make any formal changes in the wording of their speeches in delivery. The judges are six in number and are members of the speech departments of the six universities I who are members of the league.
