SUNDAY, MAY 27, 1928 TWO ALUMNI OR PLAN JOINT REU~ ''THE MICHIGAN DAILY ____________________________ BYRD'S AN TARC TIC TRIP WILL BE VERY ELABORATE VENTURE-GOUOLD Closing Out Sale' Walnut Mahogany and Maple Furniture 4 iI 'Seventeen of the fif;y iing imem- bers of the dental and medical class- es o$1 76, '77, and '78 who are holding a joint reunion this year have al- ready definitely announced their in- tention, of attending the reunion, June 16 and 17. Most of the graduates of these classes are already over sev- enty-live years of age and many of them are Civil War veterans. The class of '76D, the first dental class graduated from the University of Michigan, is to be represented by two of its five living members, Dr. J. E. Post of Courtland, New York, and Dr. Walter H. Jockson of Ann Ar- bor. Nine stu~dents were originally graduated in the class of '761) and with only five living at the present time the attendance of two at the reunion is considered remarkable. Dr. Jackson served in the Civil Wa~r as chief trumpeter for the Nineteenth New York Cavalry and is now prac- ticing dentistry in Ann Arbor. The second dental class of the Ulni- versity, the class. of '77D, will have three members present out. of a liv-' ing membership of five. At graduation time, this class had ten members, one4 more than the class of the year be-I fore. "Our trip this fall to Antartica will be the most dangerous, ambitious, and elaborate air flight that has ever been attempted, and that includes Atlan- tic flights," stated Professor Lau- rence M. Gould of the Geology depart- ment, who will serve as official geo- logist and geographer on Commander Byrd's expedition to the South Pole. "The terrific gales that blow con- tinually on the southern ice cap to- gether with all the tremendous diffi- culties, to be encountered in such cli- mate will surely make the expedition a precarious one," he said. But, in the opinion of the geologist, the trip will undoubtedly be a suc- cess for every care is being taken to forestall emergencies. Speaking of Commander Byrd, Pro- fessor Could said, "Byrd is a very in- spiring leader. He is daring, yet he always prepares completely to meet any possible event that is likely to oc- cur. And he is very well informed on subjects of current interest, which makes him such a. charming' and in- terestin g person~ality."
