Swan, director of the Bartol Pounda-': tion Research Laboratories in Phila- delphia, delivered his lecture on " Thel Riddle of the Atom" Friday afternoori 1 in the West Physics building lecturet hail. Dr. Swan has been for many j years i~n authority on electro-magnet- ic theories and as such has; held pro-I fessional positions at the Universities of Minnesota, Chicago, and Yale. Dr. Swan was introduced by Pro- fessor H. ,MN. Randall of the physics department and after a short prerora- tion in which hie compared the atom to a multi-cycle motor' and the ex- i istent physical theories to men who are bound to grow old hie proceeded to explain in a few words the theories of the leading physicists of this day., With regard to the atom and how and' why it Aworkls, hr sa id, "Tile tendency of the modern ciiivuntnr-i .theory is to j find out how the atom. works." In this connection Dr. Swan believes that his theory that one Ottom can affect 1 others without itself being affected is of more importance than the conser-, v~ation of energy theory to which it I is opposed. In developing' the struc-;t r f t e a o ib h o rS w r feld theory he said the atom was re- itin-~ light is its electrons Wass front i presented as a planetary system em- one to another. Of the Born-Heisen- ber-S'ehrodinger theory. Dr. Sw-an re-, marked that it was "one in which no i Ionger do we have a model of the atomn, but we -content ourselves with describing the behavior of the atome in mathematical language which ap- peals to the correspondenc'e between! ,certain regularities in mathem'atical structure and the regularities exhib- ited by the atom" The lecture wash delivered under the auspices of Sigma Xi, the honor- ~ary engineering fraternity, at whoseI Initiation banquet Dr. Swan gave an- other talik ADELPIII TO MA KE PLANS FORPARTY!, Officers for the next year will be nominated and new members will be initiated at a meethng of Adelphil house of irepresentatives in Angell b2all at T:30 o'clock this evening.
