Detroit every week-end to play the
organ in the Woodward Avenue Pres-
byterian church. This particular Sat-
urday hie met Fred Lawton, who had
gradnated Jrom the University of
-Michigan the preceding June. Both'
men, while students at the University,
had long been writing' songs tegether
for Mihigan operas and so the clfance
meeting called for no formal intro-
ductions. They talked enthu siastically
about the forth comning opera much of
which they - had composed a tew~
months previously. Because it was
fall, and because J. Fred Law ton was
one of th'e two c onver canits, the talkc
soon drifted to football. MNichigan's
prospects with easter n teams became
the topic.
"We need a. new song now," said
Moore. "T'he old Victors' is a distinct
Cham'pion of the West' song, and theE
West isn't going to mean much this
y'ear!"
"All right," agreed Lawton, "Let's
write one."
The time was right. The idea was
sound. So the'tkNo men began to think
and in 'a few hours had enough sug-
gestions. for a _o> (l start. All fhey
lacked was a piano on which to try
their efforts!i
Lawton's home was honored that !
evening with the presence of two men
-vho were later to be known as writ-
ers of "Varsity." The l awton family,
unconsciously, was 'transformed into
a -critic comimittee whose praises ser-
ved to aid the men in their work. K'
Both men worked diligently half the
night, playing the song over and over,
