the "meet record on three occasions.
Eugene Beatty of Northeastern,
high point scorer in last years meet

Arnold is the present national indoor
champion in the 880 and if pressed
should chalk up a new nmark in hisI
specialty.
From present indications it ap-
dears that the mark most likely to
be erased is that in the shot. Ed.
Turaschoff, dimunitive Cass Tech
weight man, has been tossing the ball
well over fifty feet and should estab-
lish <a m'ark which will be safe for
years to come. .
Team Entries Named
For Saturday's Meet

event will be held under the auspic-
es of the Evanston Olympic comniit-
tee.
Northwestern and Chicago univers-
ity athletes as well as a nunber of
club athletes will participate in the
carnival. Walter Laufer of the Lake
Shore Athetic club will attempt to
lower the record for the 100 meter
back stroke. Ethel Lackey and her
colleagues of the Illinois Women's
Athletic club will attempt to ower
the marks in the 400, 500 and 000
yard reays. Jane and Ruth Faunts of
the same club will give fancy diving
exhibitions.
Coach Tom Robinson who has
charge of the swimming part of the
progranm will pit his varsity and
freshman splashers in a dual meet
while the Daughters of Neptune, com-
posed of Northwestern's star women
swimmers will provide a nunmber of
stunts.
Coach Orion Stuteville, wrestling
coach at Northwestern who has charge
of the wrestling and boxing has ga-
thered an all-star card. "Red" Krogh,
175 pound champion of the Univers-
ity of Chicago will head a group of
stars from that school. Northwest-
ern's stars including Ralph Lupton,
national intercollegiate lightweight
champ will lead Northwestern's en-
try. Other Northwestern stars include

lage of stars, the long distance runs:
are especially well fortified with star
performers who will go a long way
towards forcing some time off of the
existing marks for these events. Rec-
ords in both the mile and two mile
are expected to be approached if not
broken.
Among the star milers are :Martin
of Purdue, Elliott of Iowa, Fieldsx,
Banks, Little and Clapham of Indi-
ana, Monroe of Michigan, Abbott, Mc-
Elwee, Novak and Stine of Illinois
d and Bullamore, Petaja and Moe of
Wisconsin.
Martin m'ust be considered a fav-
orite due to the 4:22 mile he ran in
the Purdue-Chicago dual meet, May
5. Ie will probably encounter his
greatest opposition from the Illinois
milers mentioned above. Fields of
Indiana is another runner who nust
be figured to pick off some points.
Practically the same runners will
compete in the two mile while some
will run in either race depending on
how their coach decides to juggle
then about. Leonard Hunn of Iowa
who won the indoor two mile in 1927
will lze a tor notcher again this year.
Fairfield of Illinois is another credit-
able performer. Abbott also of Illi-
nois. who ran a 9:27.5 two mile to
win the indoor conference title last
winter, will be a favorite.
Indications point to one of the
greatest outdoor track meets in the
history of the games. Plans are be-
ing made to take care of a record
crowd since this is the first time the
meet has been held in Chicago since'
1924 and the first one at Northwest-
ern since 1916. At that time Dismond,
Chicago's great quarter miler ran
to a world's record which has stood

major leagues and the Cieveand in- 
dians, under new .nmanagement and
rejuvenated by a good share of this
new talent, have started something
that they hope to be able to finish.
"The way these youngsters, such as ,
ind at second base, Langford in
center, Hodapp at third and others,
have come through so far, along with
some great pitching, has kept us up
in the race," says Roger Peckinpaugh,,
the field manager.
"And we expect to stick there," adds
Billy Evans, the general manager,

This new Cleveland triumvirate, in-
vading the stronghold of the World's
champions for the first time, is one

and Peckinpaugh, veteran shortstop,1

and adjusting his somewhat make-
shot lineup with consummate skill.
So far they have been getting re-
sults, m-uch more so, in fact, than ev-
en the most enthusiastic backers of
the Indians anticipated at the. start
of the season. They are safely en-
trenched in the first division, within
striking distance of the top, although

in pre-season calculations to sixth
position.

IOWA CITY, Ia., May 9.-Fifteen
hundred entry blanks for the official
mid-western sectional Olympic track
and field trials have been i ailed from
the University of Iowa where the meet
will be staged June 23..
The affair is one of ten sectional
meets conducted under the supervi-
sion of the Amateur Athletic Union.
Included in the mid-estern district
are nine states-Iowa, Nebraska,
North and South Dakota, Missouri,
Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, and
Minnesota. Any registered amateur
athlete in these states is eligible to
compete at Iowa City. Track events
will be contested over Olympic metric
distances, but the field events are
similar to those regularly scheduled
in United States, meets.
Here is the program of the ten
track and eight field events: 100, 200,
400-meter dashes; 800, 1,500, 5,000 and
10,000-meter runs; 3,000-meter steeple
chase, 110-meter high hurdles, 400-
meter 3-foot hurdles, running high
and broad jumps, pole vault, running
hop, step, and jump, 16-pound shot
.put, 16-pound hammer throw, discus
and javelin throws.
