Michigan will be represented in the pole vault bythe veteran Pat Prout, who, if he happens to have of his good days, should finish near the top of the list. Following the Illinois game here the Boilermakers will stack uic- gainst Chicago Friday afternoon as one of the athletic features of Junior Prommweek nd, and on Monday will meet Minnesota in the final of the three-game home series. Illinois' invasion of Stuart field will afford the Boilermakers an opportun- ity to revenge the defeat they were handed in the first Conference game of the season, 5-0, although the loss of Maxton and lack of opportunity for outdoor work mak~es the Purdue chances for victory sonvewhat meik- er. Illinois earned a half-share 3n the Conference title with Iowa last season when Purdue finished in fourth place and to date the former have been journeying along in chain- pionship stride. With Maxton lost due to the injfi'y in the Michigan gane, Lambert may send Caraway, erstwhile outfielder, to the mound in an effort to retrieve the prestige lost by the Purdue nine in the Illinois and Michigan games. The 1929 game will be played in the Illinois stadium at Urbana, while in 1930 Coach Rob- ert Zuppke'sr squad will journey East, the spectacle to be staged either at West Point. or New York City. It is thought that the scheduling of the Illini by the Army came as a re- sult of the rupture of athletic rela- tions with the Navy last January. This will give the Army another wes- tern opponent, as Notre Dame has appeared annually on the Cadets' grid card for several years. The last football game between the. Army and a Big Ten team was ,in 1903, when the Cadets defeated Chi- cago. Illinois played an eastern team last in 1926 when "Frosty" Peter's field goal gave the Indians a 3-0 victory over Pennsylvania. Coach Elton E. Wieman, general- issimo of the Wolverine coaching staff, took advantage of the prevail- ing weather conditions and sent the large squad through another strenu- ous drill yesterday afternoon on the south Ferry field practice plot. Yesterday's ractice was devoted exclusively to departmental phases of the game. Blocking, tackling, charg- ing, and passing and receiving of the ,>val were the phases stressed by the coaches in the drill. -Coach Franklin Cappon, who recent- ly rejoined the Michigan coaching. staff after spending two years as head coach at the University of Kan- sas and himself a star lineman and fullback here several years ago, led the drill in blocking. Cappon has a unique way of instructing his charges, for when words fail, he himself shows the men how the task is performed of the ends or the most part, while Coach Clifford Keen has the other linemen under liis supervision. Coach Ray Courtwright has charge of Ihe host of backfield candidates.a While there have not been any in- tensive efforts on the part of the coaching staff to test the candidates, there have been some that have been showing more than ordinary ability already. Simrall and Holmes, mem- bers of the last year's freshman elev- en, have been showing ability to throw passes, while Truskowski, Var- sity ceilter two seasons ago but a candidate for an end position this year, has been performing well on the receiving end. Among the back- field aspirants, Gembis, Geistert, and McBride have been showing up in fine style.
