CENTERS ARE ABUNDANT
In past years, Coach Edwin J1. Math-
er has selected the all-Conference
basketball team for The Daily, but the
Rkipper's illness comblined with un-
willingness of Coach George Veenker
to following Mather's wake after a
single year as headcoach, has left the
burden of the selections with us.
An abundance of centers at the ex-
pense of stars at the other places has
resultd in many complications in mak-
ing a selection, but there can be no
doubt as to the right to first. team
berths of at least two athletes-3en-
nie Oosterbaan of Michigan and
'Stretch Murphy of P~urdue.
Qosterb aaii Makes 11z' ord
Bennie was everything a forward
might be and seemed almost as nmuch
at home under 1the basket as on the
gridiron,, sinking a record number of
57 baskets in climbing to high point
honors. Murphy was not only 6 feet
7 inches above sea level, he was goodl.
Paints were his specialty, while he
jumped as well as any center except
Chapman.
In making 'selections, it will be not-
ed,. that no team is given more than
one place on the first quintet while
eight of the 10 Conference schools find
places on the three teams.
Wells of Indiana is placed as Ooster-
baans running mate at forward with-
out a great deal of doubt, though this
is not meant to belittle such a group)
of forwards as Wheeler and1 Harme-
son of Purdue, How of Illinois, Fish-
er of Northwestern and others. The
Hoosier was a man who was best in
the pinches. It was he who was re-
sponsible for giving his team, a share
in the title when Illinois had checked
all else.
Walter Placed At Forwvard"
Walter, the Wildcat center, was cer-,
tainly deserving of a second team
berth but with McCracken at pivot, he
was shifted to forward where he would
fit in admirably with Wheeler of whom
little need be said. Johnny How was
almost the only redeeming. feature in
Illinois' string of losses and (deserves
a place on the third squad. Fisher
is named his running mate just. a
'shade ahead of Harmeson of Pur-
due. Orwig of Michigan nad Strick-
land of Indiana did not play the fufll
season but should be at the top in an-
other year.
While Murphy and McCracken rank
one-two, there is much room for argu-
ment about the third center place with
