Varsity candidates pairticipated in nine of the 10 events listed on the in- door program, the mile relay being the only event that was not run off. Coach Stephen J. Farrell expects to base his selection of the squad to be taken to Iowa City largely on the re- sults of yesterday's performances. Pront Vaults Over 12 Feet In the pole vault, the first event on the program, Pat Prout, veteran of last year's Varsity team, cleared the bar at 12 feet 3 inches, while Erick- son failed to reach the 12 foot mark. Waldo was able to clear 5 feet 10 inches in the high jumnp. The candidates in the shot put failed to show to advantage, as neith- er Arendt or Packer were able to reach the 40 foot mark In any of their three trials. Arendt was eredited with one toss of 38 feet 11 inches, while Packer's~ best marks was about two feet short of this. Trials in the 440 proved to be tt1n most closely contested event on the afternoon's card, eight men running in four heats participated in the quay ter nmile, and five of them covered the distance in less than :53. Jdnes made the best time when he ran iris quart- er in :52; IMunger second :52.2; third Freese :52.5; fourth, Dalton Seymour. :52.6; fifth, Barton :52.8. Rester And Chiapmian Share Hlonors Capt. Buck Hester and Chapman, his sophomore rival, shared the hon- ors in the two trial heats of the 60 yard dash, each capturing one of them. Hester took the first sprint from Chap- man by a few inches in :06.6, while Chapman won the second in :06.5. Grodsky was third in both races. In spite of the fact that he knocked over two of the barriers in the 70 yard hurdles Don Cooper was credited with :09.1 for the event, while Kinney ran the second heat in : 09.2, after placing second in the first. After running the first three quar- ters of the mile trial in 3;08.8, Monroe finished easily in 4:24.8, ahead of Jes- 'on and Goetz. Lomont ran an im- pressive race in the half mile, fiaish- ing in 2:00.6 ahead of Leonard and Grunow. Ted Wuerfel beat Groehen, freshman star,-in the' two mile event by a scant margin in 9:57.
