SPARTAN FOILSME N
TO OPPOSE VARSITY
Matchl To E Final, fne For Ilicliigan,
Fencers Rfeoiv Western Con-
ferciie Neet At Chicago
STATE -TEAM IS STRONG
Michigan State will be the next
opponents of the Varsity fencing
team on Saturday, here, when the
Wolverine foismen will engage in
their last dual meet of the season.
The final match for the Varsity duel-
ists will be in the Conference on
March 8 andl 9 at Chicago for the
championship of the Big Ten.
Lisplaying a decidedI relapse in
form the Wolverines lost to Ohio
State last Saturday 10-5. Captain
Wigge~rs, especially, had an off day,
losing -all three of his foils contests
and one sabre match. He broke even
in the epee' matches, winning onel
and losing one. Stolpman was the
only Michigan fencer to show lils
wares, winning both of hi~s foils en-
gagements. Hammer followed the}
lead of Wigers and lost two foils ei-
matches, and Winer lost both of the
Epee matches to the strong Buckeye l
aggregation.
Michigan State comes here willh.
high hopes of annexing a win over
the Michigan foilsmen. The State
duelists were barely nosed out by the
Detroit fencing club in a recent
match. The Spartans are being
coached by a former Egyptian no-
bleman, Iwho has displayed Uls ability
here on numerous occasions during
the past few years ,and has turned
out high calibre teams in the State
college for some time.
Last season the Spartans took the
Buckeyes into camp. The latter were
the Conference chanipionls in fenc-
ing in 1927.
Under the instruction of Ttuscon
and Finney the Wolverine duelists
are getting strenuous workouts in
the Waterman gymnasium daily in
preparation for the match *with the
Green and White and for the Chi-
cago -meet the following week.

NEW YORK, Feb. 29-The age old
