OLYMC FAVORITES I- - - New Yorker And Chicagoan Finish First And Third In International Bobsled Derby I - - SKATERS PERFORM WELL ST. MORITZ, Switzerland, Feb. 9.- The Inited States was installed an overwhelming favorite in at least one event in the winter sports program today when two American Ibobsleds, ,competing in the annual St. Moritz derby, finished first and third. Forty- four representatives of 22 nations, all' of them Olympic entries, took part in the race. John Heacon, of New York, won the Derby which was held on the Olym.n pic bobsled chute over a course five yards short of a mile. Each entrant made four trips down the winding incline. Heacon's added time for the four dashes was 6:22 9-10, with a best single trip mark of 1:34 4-10. The crack Belgian entry, Henri Lambert, finished second with Wil- Liam Fisk, of Chicago third. Lambert had shown the way in three days of trials, but the best he could do for one trip today was 1:40. The Olym- pie bobsled champion'ship will be de- cided February 17. American speed skaters, O'Neill Farrell, Eddie Murphy, Valentine Bialis, and Irving Jaffe, showed splen- did form today in ,tryouts over the 1,500 meter cour e. All were close to 2:30 for the distance. The Olympic record is 2:20 4-10. MATMEN LOSE GEORGE THROUGH INELIGIBILITY (Continued from Page Six) has been strengthened by the addi- tion of Lange, a veteran of the 1925 team, and McAfee, who is considered a promising candidate for the pitch- ing staff. Lange is an outfielder. Honors for attaining the highest scholastic standing for the semester go to Sherwood Waldron, '28, of Ann Arbor, a member of the hockey squad. Waldron is credited with a record of 15 hours of A. A total of 177 hours of A were awarded to Varsity athletics, while the B grades nearly balanced the C's received. Thompson and Wagner finished in a dead heat in the 100 yard breast stroke, while Spindle beat Chaffee by a narrow margin in the 100 yard back stroke. Wagner and Watson tied for first in the 220 yard free style. The Mich- igan 300 yard medley relay team also defeated the Grand Rapids trio. This' meet marked the initial ap- pearance of Bob Walker, sophomore star, in Varsity competition. Walker displayed great ability on the fresh- nan team last season, but he was in- eligible last semester. His addition will greatly strengthen the Wolver- ine team for the approaching Big Ten season. His sneed was one of the important factors in setting the new relay records Wednesday night. The Michigan tank team will get its first taste of Conference compe- tition tlais year when it engages the Indiana natators at Bloomington to- morrow night. Coach Mann and 12 members of the Michigan team will leave at 8:45 o'clock tonight for Bloomington. Capt. Narnall, Walait- is, Reif, Ault, Walker, S'eager, Wag- ner, Thom-pson, Hubbell, Spindle, Bailey and Horn are the men who will make the trip. EVANSTON - Miller; swimmilIng captain, Lewis, track captain, and Schuler, wrestling captain, have been declared ineligible at Northwestern university. At any rate, Northwestern has been forced to give up hopes for Big Ten leadership for the pres- ent-at least. Last night's scrimmage found the Varsity going through another rigor- ous scrimmage in preparation for the Purdue avalanche. As Coach Veenker said, it was just some more of the same thing to get the team at the top of its game: No particular changes in the lineup are conteinplated de. finitely, although eligibility has increased reserve power. The five probable starters are Capt. Ifarrigan, Oosterbaan, McCoy, Chapman and Orwig. EVANSTON, Il.Three Northwestern university women have opened up a letter shop.
