has landed with the Philadelphia
Athletics.w
The veteran outelder, who was
released a few days ago by the
Washington SenAIrs, came to terms
with Connie M'ack and as a result
'will report at the Athletics training
quarters at Frt Meyers, March 1.
Speaker arived in New York yes-
terday from a hunting trip and ar-
ranged details by telephone with
Mack, who is vacationing at Mount
Plymouth, Florida.
Mack's signing of Speaker fills a
gap made in the Philadelphia out-
field by the release of Ty Cobb and
Zach Wheat. Last season "Spoke"
it is understood,, received a salary
from the Senators ranging from
$40,000 to $50,000 which price was an
obstacle this year for a renewal of
contract.
Speaker declined to accept a re-
duction, as suggested by Clark Grif-
fith of the Washington club.
Neither Tris nor Mack would com-
ment on the salary arangement.
"I'm satisfied with the terms and
so is Connie," Speaker said.
Mack paid Cobb a huge sum last
year, som'e reports quoting his ser-
vices commanding as high as $60,-
000, which would be $10,000 under
Babe Ruth's annual check from Col-
onel Ruppert.
The addition of Speaker to the
Philadelphia roster will give Mack a
veteran outfield with Tris at cen-
ter, Al Simmons at left and Ring
Miller in the right corner.

LOSES TO DETROIT CLUB

next Saturday night when they take
on the strong Illini fencers, marking
the first Big Ten competition for the
newly formed Wolverine fencing
squad.
The results of Saturday's matches

Sabres-Wiggers lost to Tuscon 5-1,
to Caswell 5-2 Pettibone lost to
Tuscon 5-2 and won from Caswell
5-4.
Foils-Hammer lost to Caswell 5-0,
to Bardwell 5-2 and defeated Tusconi
5-4. Wiggers lost to Tuscon 5-3, to
Bardwell 5-2 and won over Caswell
