Pittsburgh Looms Asl
F'robable Winner In
Senior League Race
Unless an unforseen upset occurs,
the Pittsburgh Pirtes are definitely as-
sured to represent the National
League in the World's Series against
the New York Yankees, American
League champions, less than a week
from today.
'The Pirates are clinging to their
leadership in the sensational National
League race by only a two-game mar-
gin over the second place St. Louis
Cardinals, but the advantage, some de-
clare, is insurmountable for the Cards
to overcome in the few contests that
remain on their schedule. Rain kept,
loth the Cards and Pirates idle while
New York beat the Phillies.
The Pirates have three games re-
maining on their schedule and need
only two victories in the three battles
to cinch the league pennant, while the
St. Louis nine must take all of its
three engagements left on its sched-
ule. The Cards can win the pennant
if they emerge victors in all three
games and the Pirates lose all three.
The best the New York Giants can ex-
pect in that event is a tie.
Seeing this loophole, the Cardinals
have 'asumed a psychological attitude
regarding their chances to win the
National League gonfalon. The entire
Cardinal team met before Tuesday's
game and determined on a split for
the world's series. Distributions were
figured on the basis of first and sec-
ond places. If the team finishes second
its share of the series receipts will
depend on whether the Pirates defeat
the Yanks for the world's, champion-
ship.

CHICACO, S'ept. 2S.-The real "mys-
tery team" of the several uncertain
squads in the Big Ten football chain-
pionship raee this fall is the thirty-
sixth edition of Amos Alonzo itagg's
University of Chicago eleven. ,
Craduations wrecked Chicago's foot-
ball hopes last season, but the wealth
of light, fast backfield material in the
younger classes this year has enabled
Stagg to assemble two complete sets
of backs with replacements foie each.
Backs Plentiful.
Three of last year's varsity back-
field are back in uniform, and there
also are a dozen likely ball carriers
coming up. Whether this situation was
visualized by the dean of conference
coaches, the fact remains that Stagg
sized up the hardest schedule this fall
in his 36 years of service at Chicago.
"Inky" Bluhm and Smith have
shown skill in tossing passes, and
Heywood and Hollohan proved cup-
able ball carriers in yesterday's scrim-
mage, this quarter making up Stagg's
second backfield.
Have Reserve rower.
Minnesota also has acquired trong
reserves to support its backfield of
threefourths veterans, including the
All-American fullback, Herb Joesting.
Coach Spears has 17 letter men in uni-
form.
Secret workouts were started yes-
terday at Michigan and Iowa.
The return to eligibility of Joe
Kresky, last year's fullback was the
best news of the practice season for
Nisconsin.
NEN HAVEN.-The Yale football
squad is reported to be short of good
material.
