Michigan's basketball team must
show nothing less than, vast improve-
ment if it is in any way to live up
to advance predictions of dopesters
that the Wolverines were top-heavy
favorites to repeat their successes of
a year ago when they annexed the
Big Ten cage title with 10 victories in
12 starts -- and it must show that
improvement in the next two days if
it entertains hopes of defeating the
fast moving Northwestern quintet.
Newcomers Disappoint
Heralded as champions of the first
water, the Wolverines have failed to
live up to this high rating thus f4 r.j
It. was said, in fact that some of the
new men would be apt to push thej
veterans, Harrigan, Oosterbaan ,and
McCoy out of regular positions, but
this has failed to materialize whatso-
ever. To be frank, the new men have
proven a disappointment.
But the story does not end there;
the showing of the veterans has been
far from reassuring. They have
shown only rare flashes of the great
work of a year ago and as yet niave1
(lone little to help working in the
new combination.1
Lack of seriousness seems to be a1
general criticism for the entire, Wol-
erine team. In the game with BradleyE
the Wolverines were serious just
twice, both times when Bradley wasf
within three points of them.

In the first half, with the scorei
9-6, the Wolverines scored 9 straightE
points; in the second half, with the
score 27-24, they tallied 16 points
without a return. The big question4
'seems to be whether they can remain
in a serious enough mood long
enough to win over the stiff opposi-
tion that Northwestern and others areI
expected to furnish.
Another difficulty and one which is
perhaps fundamental in the troubies
of the Michigan aggregation is theI
absence of any regular combination.I

DETROIT, Jan. 3-The American
league franchise of the Detroit Car-
dinal professional bas ketball tea.mi
has been cancelled, it was announced
last night by the management of the
Olympia Gardens sports arena, liold-

card was announced as the reason
for the action. Basketball is not a
popular sport here, officials said, and
it was felt the returns accruing from
exhibitions at the arena were worth)
