ISCONSIN FAVORED TO CAPTURE BIG TEN CONFERENCE STANDING HONORS FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE SEA SON Defeat Of Illinois By Ohio State May Enable gophers Or Michigan To Lay Claim To Title ILLINI FACE OLD JINX It is not entirely without the palej of possibility that the present standing of the Big Ten teams will take on aI new complexion when the sun sets to- day on the various stadia in which the} Conference elevens are competing to- day in the finale of the 1527 grid sea- son. Three teams-Illinois, M inn esota. and li('higan--stvill have possibilities' of sharing the championship of the Western Conference. Illinois can (linc'h undisputed titular honoars with? ..=, a victory over Ohio State, while aj loss of the Illini to the Buckeyes would permit .Minnesota, if victorious over Michigan, 10 lay claim to first place. Should the Wolverines emerge victors over the Gophers they can enter into a tie for the top position, with Illinois. The results of the three other con-t tests scheduled in the Big Ten tomor- row will have only a slight signiti-4 cance in the final standing. All ofr the teams involved in these three battles, together with Ohio State, can' enter into a tie for the cellar posi- tion by either ties or losses. Illinois, present leader in the title race, will- be facing an old jinx in the game today; namely, that a weaker Ohio State team, doped to lose, will, win from a superior Illini eleven. The1 trick has been turned several times by weaker Buckeye teams to cheat the Indianas' considered stronger before the contest, oAt of the Conference title, and the trick may be performed by Dr. Wilce's men toady in the home- coning ht Columbus. Most famous of all the traditional Minnesota-Michigan grid duels is the sensational 6-6 tie of 1903, but noth- ing in the way of a deadlock in games won may be said to exist, for the Wolverines hold a marked advantage of 14 to 3 triumphs over the Gophers since the inception of relations be- tween the two elevens 35 years ago. Thoroughly Beaten' in 1892 It was in 1892 that the Maize and Blue team first journeyed out Minne- apolis way, stopping on the trip long enough to dispose of the Wisconsin squad. Hardin, center, was severely injured against the Badgers, but it is extremely doubtful if even his pres- ence would have been of any avail in that 'first game With the Gophers, Michigan being thoroughly outclassed, Next year again the Northmen trounced the Michigan gridmen, 34-20, their last victory until 1919, when Oss and Captain Lampi inflicted the worst defeat ever -sustained by the Yostmen, 34-7. After the two losses in the opening pair of games the Wolverines smashed their way to a 20-0 triumph in 1895,s maintaining the winning streak in the four contests played until that 190 game. HIGH HONOR BESTOWED ON MICHIGAN CAPTAIN An honor which has seldom been accorded to any single player is be- stowed on Captain Bennie Oosterbaan who today has his picture on the cover of the official football program and athletic review. The picture of Oosterbaan is one with him in an M sweater, the yellow and blue col- ors of the letter and sweater forming the dominating color scheme for the whole cover. The program has one hundred pag- es and contains, besides the informa- tion concerning the game with Min- nesota,_ a review of the athletic en- deavors of the 1926-1927 seasons. Not since the Wildcats trounced the Buckeyes in the opening game of the season have they had their full back- field strength available. Saturday however, all four regulars-Capt. Walt I lolmer, star halfback. will also be in the lineup as his in- jurcd ankle has healed sufficiently. "Yatz" Levisou will call signals and ITiny Lewis will perform at fullback. It i doubtful whether Arnold Kar'- I tens, regular tackle, will be able to see action due to a leg injury received in the Indiana game. Although badly battered with in- juries and bruises the Purple will n ake a valiant effort to wind up the season Saturday with a win. Iowa's victory over Wisconsin Saturday will make the Ilawkeyes a formidable foe and Coach Manley is busy at work this wi cek in an effort to get his regulars in r"ainess for the game. Six Purple Regulars End Careers Six Northwestern players will wind up their collegiate football careers Saturday. They are Capt. Vic Gustaf- son, halfback; Tiny Lewis, fullback; Waldo Fisher, end; Bus Owens, guard, and Rudy and Al Schuler, tackles. Four of these players-Gustafson, Lewis, Fisher, and R. Schuler-have played regular ball for the Wildcats during the last three years and rank among the greatest players turned out at Northwestern. Iowa will bring a determined eleven to Evanston, intent upon adding an- other victory to their standing. Last Saturday's win over Wisconsin has boosted the stock of the Hawkeyes and they are expected to stage a desperate fight. The lineup: Northwestern Iowa Fisher L.E.
