Avance Reported
Tihe Chambers were instrumental i
providing ,for an ample supply . of
wood upi ° Jbc 470000,000 acres ot
land that "will be idle if not kept In
forest. Reports of committees at tie
m:eeting showed that despite advers
conditions an amazing advance I
forestry has been mpade in the United
States during the last 25 years and
rspecially within the last ten years,.
It was found that a majority of th
owners of r extensive forest lands of
the west and .south and in other re-
gions maintain ownership of their
cut-over lands, and protect them from
fre despite heavy taxes. Some 2VF
corp~orations owning an aggregate
area of 21,000,000 acres-nearly equal
to the whole of the forests of France
-have reported the adoption of for-
est management policies.
Recommendations passed at the
meeting approved of the Clarks-Mc-
Nary national forestry act which will
inciease the annual appropriations
towards forestry and will enable ex-
tending fire protection throughout the
country. A resolution was also passe1
to investigate the land taxation sys-
tems of the country and to revis
them to the end that local puli
revenues shall be protected; and at
the same time, the vital public eco-
:omic interests of the communities
shall be safeguarded. A comprehens-
ive forestry research was authorized
and vigorously supported. A measurswne hrb Cnrs ilpo
vide an appropriation for this re
search. This will make reforestation
andl wood utilization more intelligent
ly understood.
The National Chamber of Commerce
called the meeting to interest lum-
ber-using companies in commercia
forestry.
