ARMAOLOlGtUAL FIELD WORK IN LOS~T COUJNTRY ISj EXPLAINED TELLS OF YUCATAN WORK' Engaed n ExavaingLost Cities of Regionu Dor. Sylvanius G. Morley, authority, on the Maya civilization and director' of the Carnegie Institute's Chichen 'Itza pro ject, spoke Wednesday after- noon in the Natural Science .auditor- iumi on the subject "The 1927 Season at rta. Dr. Morley began his lecture with an~ explanation of the type of country' found int Yucatan and the difficulties which it offers to archaeological field work. According to the speaker, the district in which the ruined Maya cities are found is almost entirely cov- ered 'with a dense tropical growth,f whic~h offers the most serious ob- stacles to travel. Dr. Morley empha-i sized the fact, that the trails are very dific~ult and that, if they are left un- used for a few years, they are prac- tica~lly unrecogniable. It is possible, according to the speaker, to pass with- in a, few hundred feet of an entire buried city and not be aware of its existence, so denise is the forest. Waxa~etumDiscussed Waxatctum was the 'first of the ex- cavation projec~ts'which Dr. 'Morley discussed. He~re, according to the, speaker, was found the earliest Maya monument known to exist. The tem- ple at this city is also of especial interest in that it~ has an astronomical. significanice in 'connection with the various phases of the sun. Speaking of the temple, Dr. Morley remarked that, like most of the greatl Maya structur'es, it was built upon earlier work. In. excavating the al- tars the archaeologists discovered numerous bat skeletons, obsidian sac- rificial knives, and a human skull which was covered over by a pottery. basin. IDi$!esses La 3furtlla Dr. Morley then briefly discussied' the work 'being carried' on at La. Muralla and Itzna, both comparatively new p'rojects. The feature of La Muralla, 'Dr. Morley explained, 'is a, highi wall covered with stucco panels. The speaker then concluded his lec- ture with a summary of the year's progress at Chichen Itza, centuries ago the metropolis of the Maya cul- ture. Dr. Morley explained that the work of excavation and restoration was proceeding rapidly, due to the, greater efficiency' of the permanent field organization which the Carnegie Institute has established at Chichen Itza. Dr. Morley's whole lecture was Il- lustrated with. numerous colored lantern slides, showing Maya utensils, carving, and architecture.
