INDIANA NEARS LEADERS
Locked in a )triple 'tie for first
place in the Western Conference has-
ket ball race at the half way mark
in their schedules, Michigan, Pur-
due and Wisconsin with five victor-
ies and one loss look to be the out-
standing contenders for champion-
ship honors.
Indiana, however, with five wins
and two defeats cannot be safely
counted out until after the game
With Michigan Saturday night in Yost
field house. A win for the Hoosiers
would put them in a commanding
position although they must meet the
first place Wisconsin quintet and
play two games with Ohio State be-
sides a relatively easy contest with
Northwestern. Ohio State has play-
ed erratic ball all season, and though
hopelessly eliminated from champion-
ship hopes and with slight chances
for a first division berth, the Buck-
eyes are apt to prove a severe
stumbling block to Hoosier aspira-
tions.I
Iowa, wIh four victories and a pair
of losses has a powerful team and must
not be considered completely out of
the running. Erratic ball has been
a handicap to the Hawkeyes, too. Il-
linois is the only other Conference
five with better than a .500 average
and will cause a lot of trouble before
the season is over. Two of the loss-
es sustained by Coach Craig Ruby's
quintet have been by one point. Be-
fore the season closes the Illini will
meet Michigan at Urbana and also
grapple with Wisconsin in two games.
Dr. Meanwell's Badgers have the
hardest schedule on paper of the
three leaders and if they win, it will
be after a hard fight. The Badgers
have the hardest end of their schedule
before them including two games
each with Illinois and Iowa in addi-
tion to single games with Indiana
and OhiosState. There istnot a soft
spot in this schedule.
Purdue's schedule, on the other
hand, is considerably easier with two
games to be played against North-
western in addition to one with the
much trampled Gophers who have at
last broken into the win column at the
expense of Northwestern. Chicago,
rated evenly with Ohio State may
furnish an upset for the Boilermakers
in their last game, but the only two
tests remaining for Coach Lambert's
team are the games with Iowa Sat-
urday and with Michigan Feb. 28.
Coach ' Mather's, quintet, in the
depths of a slump, must pull togeth-
er in the next few days if it expects
to finish at the top of the Big Ten,
for the formidable Indiana team will
invade the ,ield house Saturday. From
then until the end of the season there
is scarcely a letup unless it be the
two gamep with Chicago, but the
Maroons' strength was shown in their
recent defeat of Indiana. The fast
coming Purdue five must be met by
the Wolverines as well as Illinois
and Iowa.-
While the Wolverines and Hoosiers
battle Saturdaythereswill be two oth-
er important contests, Purdue and
Iowa will lock horns in the latter's
new field house and Wisconsin will
journey to Ohio State for a game.
Chicago ad Northwestern also will
try to settle the Windy City feud Sat-
urday night.

(By Associated Press)
New York, Feb. 16-Jack Delaney,
cool, suave, boxer with a smashing
right, felt on edge today and was su-
premely confident of his ability to whip1
Jimmy Maloney in their 10-round bout'
Friday night at Madison Square gar-
den. The light-heavyweight champion
plans nothing but light drill now.
Meanwhile his thumping rival from
Boston, down to 202 pounds, intends
whaling his sparring partners around
the workout ring at Long Branch, N.
J., in a last minute drive for perfec-
tion of attack.
Maloney hammered away at his
mates or 10 rounds yesterday, ripping
to the body the particular type of
short left and right hooks his advisers
believe will bend the "flashing blade"
of the ring in the middle, as "Dyna-
mite Jim" expresses it.
'Maloftey's speed and punching
power brings the following proclama-
tion from Dan Morgan, boxing author-
ity at his camp, "Delaney will be no
match for Maloney because, of the
latter's straight hitting with his left,
Lis short right hand punches to the{
b ody, natural fighting spirit, ability.
speed and youth."
Delaney impresses spectators at his
Bridgeport camp with his perfect conl.
dition and ability. He boxed seven
rounds, two with George Ward, New
Jersey welterweight; three with Ed-
d:e Claike. a Baltimore Negro wel-
terweight and two with Jack Warren.
.egro heavyweight.
