These two victories over the Detroit golfers avenge the defeats adminis- tered to Michigan teams (during pre- vious seasons. The 'Wolverines attain- ed their first vict ory over the D- troiternslast Friday in a matcha played on the Detroit golf cub course. The Micigan lineup with the exception of John Glover who . replaced William Courtney, was the same as the one that plalyed in Detroit ast week. In the first individual:match Addi- son Connor and Iles ,Conley were tied at the endl of the 18 holes. Captain Fred Glover of the Michigan squad went down to (defeat when Earl Cain of the Detroit club managed to win all three points in the second match. The first foursome betwee Captain] Glover and Connor and 'Conley and Cain also ended n a tie. C'ole Repats Victory Ralph Cole repeated his triumph of last week by winning fron Joe Shiap- pacasse of Detroit. Cole defeated his opponent by a score of two and one last week, while he took two and a half points in his match yesterday af- ternoon. John Bergelin was the sec ond Wolverine to repeat his success of last Friday by taking all three points in his match with Roger Hill. The Cole-Bergelin combination' cap- tured three points in the second four- somie match in downing Schiappacasse and Hil. Robert Hastings, a vetran of two years experience, won two and a half points for the Wolverines in defeating Fr ancis Ryan, who played in the place of Larr'y Kinar of the Detroit team. John lover Captured the final indivi- dual of the day from Bud Commiskey, adding three more points to the Mich- igan total. Hastings and Glover won the third foursome of the match from Ran and Commiskey, capturing all three points., Thec scores for yesterday's match were considerably better than those madle in the play at the Detroit Golf club last Friday, dple to the fact that the weather conditions were mch rmore favorable and that the Waste- naw course is considerably easier than the one in Deroit. BergelinIi s Low Man John Iergein repated his perfor- mance of last week by making the 18 holes in 77, which,'ws the low card for the day. Bergelin was low man' in the match in Detroit, covering the difficult course in-41., in spite of the unfavorable weather conditions. Con- nor with an S0 andl John Glover with an 81 were the other players to turn in good scores in yeteray'~ play. Weather conditions yester ay prov-. ed much more favorable Ito golf than those encountered I Detroit a week ago, although a strong wind hampered the players considerably. All of the men experienced difficulty in putting due to the poor condition of the greens. The Wolverine squad appears to be in good condition for the opening con- ference matches with Purdue and Il- linois' next week. Although the team which will make the trip will not be named until Monday night, three of the men, Captain Fred Glover, Addison Connor, and Bergelin are practically certain to be selected. Glover is a vet- eran' of two years Varsity experience. while Connor is playing his second .season on the Michigan squad. Berge- lin is a sophomore whose recent play stamps him as one of the most prom- ising men on the squad._ ,WOLVERINE SWIMMERS AWARDED HIGH HNR (Continued from Page G) the 220, Moody and Druiding are awarded' the other places. No complaint can be lodged against the really wise selections in the back- stroke, and this even in spite of the fact that Spindle, Michigan, did heat J. Hill, Mi~nnesota, for for the Big Ten title. The ranking is as follows: J. Trill; Spindle and Hubbell, Michi- g--,i; Miller, Northwestern; and J. 1-lalstead, Michigan. l\ratz, Wisconsin; Carter, Iowa; Purdy, Mlinnesota; Shorr, Michigan ; andl Ba umrucjer, Ciheago, are r'ank- edl in order in the breast stroke. Al- th ..gh s appears hard to reason why R. ;1a lstoad, Michigan, was omitted - fromi the ranking after victories at various times over Baumr'ickeer, Purdy, and Shirr, the omission is justified b'ecause of the inconsistency of Hlalstead, who nevertheless, should cc, ,elop into a truly great swinmmce iv-t ;year. the t4ancy diving Colba th is frankecd ahead of Groh of Illinois, the N orthiwestern ace being given the bow~or after his return to form in the .u~tional meet at Iowa.' IRculher's splendid pit ching coupled with the heavy h-Minjg by his team- miates, i.ncluiding L. homer by Babe Fluth, gave1 the Yanks a 0-0 victory over Boston. The, Tigers, with "Rip" Collins" on the mound turned back Celveland 5-2. The Athletics continued(I their winning streak, scoring seven runs in toe sixth to defeat Wa4tshin't;- otn 8-7. In the National league, Elliott, pitched a goodl game for Brooklyn, shtting out Philadelphia 7-0. In the only other game in the senior circuit, New York downed Boston by the score of 10-3.
