Opposes Compulsory
Training, Chaplain,
Advised To Resign
COLUMBUS, March 3-Denounced by
Scabbard and Blade, and asked to re-
sign as Chaplain-Resident because of
a speech against compulsory military;
training, Capt. Donald Timerma'n is
to face a board of investigation com-
posed of reserve officers durinig the
next few days.
Timerman, who is associate pastor
of the King Avenue Methodist Epis-
copal church, held a similar position
in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for two years
before coming to Ohio State this fall.a
On Jan. 13, speaking before a meet-
ing of the Optional Drill league, Cap-
tain Timerman definitely opposed
compulsory military drill in colleges
and favored in its stead the optional
type of service. After this meeting, he
is yrepgrted as having said, "The gov-
ernment prefers men with no military i
training - (in time of war) and "my
only reason for being in the R.. O. T.
C. is so that in case of another war,
I can keep the boys clean."
Timerman was graduated from Bos-
on Theological School in 1924 coming
to Ann Arbor in the fall of the same
year as director of student activities
at Wesely Hall. Prior to entering the
Boston school, he served as a line
officer in the 2nd, 5th, and 33rd in-
fantry having attained the rank. of.
captain during the World War.
