The eams should prove o be aI P: rong agregation, according 'o early i tlcatiozis~ if several ilwi can be developedl in the waker events, eslo-, c(ally in the weights. The squad is well fortifted in the dashes and sprints. Hester and Lescbinsky,'tied for first in the Con- ference 100 last year, and Kelly, aj veteran, form a trio that is at least equal to that, of any other school. Like wise many men are available f~r thle Sprints. Mueller, Ohheiser andt ' Slhmelng are the most outstanding performers in the quarter mile, while Liket seems to hold first call in theI half. Munger, a veteran, and Kelly, promising sophomore, are both being trained in the 80 rather than the 440, their customary events, and one of them is expected to be used in this event. In the ,distance runs, the squad lia several good men. Monroe, a cross- country man, will probably be used in the mile, while Wells, Hornberger, Briggs, and Iskendarian, all veterans, are candidates for the two inile ru, although Coach Farrell may shift one or two of these to the shorter dis- tance. In the weight events, Lovette is the best choice in the shot put, and Carl- son, former 'freshman star, may be eligible in time for the first meet. Keck, a sophomore, and MAfee will handle thehamnmer event, and Captain Northrop wi'I be listed in the javelin throw. Schravesand, of last year's team, is the only man who has shown promise in the discus throw. Northrop, and Prout, in the pole 'vault, and Kelly in the high jump, have shown themselves as te remain- ing likely performers for regular competition. " Fortune Smiles On Youthful Star Who Wins Catalina Swim (By Associated Press) LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17.-The twin sister of fame and fortune smilingly dangled motion picture and vaude- ville contracts today before George Young, 17-year-old Canadian who won the Wrigley $25,000 Catalina chanel marathon, but the young conqueror hesitated. What he wants most of all is his mother. He left her in Toronto, ab- andoned his standing as a Canadian amateur and turned up here nearly broke in order to compete in the swim and when the captains and kings off the aquatic world had fallen behind him one by one, he floundered out of the water at point Vicente early yesterday morning only one of 96 of those essayed to swim the 22 mile gap between Catalina island and the mainland. Young, who was in the water 151 hours and 45 minutes, landed on the California mainland at 3:06 a. In., af- ter a pretty game of " freezout" and drnewt oeo h ol' best swimmers. H'e negotiated a dis- tance of between '30 and 34 miles in spanning the 22 mile channel, and in I water averaging around 57 degrees. Two women and two men stayed in the race until they were within sight of th finishing points. Mrs. Margaret C. 1user, of Long B4each, Cal., and Miss Martha Stager of Portland. Ore., came near to collecting the additional $15,000f-offered for the first woman to negotiate the channel.'- Miss StagerI -vas four miles away when she quit.I Peter Meyer. of Cincinnati, was -Nvth- in a mile and a half of the goal when he quit. The process of elimination among the 1.53 original entrants began be- ;fore the race started. Only 102 facedr the water as the starting gun banged. Six of these failed to take to the water. The remaining 96 began dlropping out ;after 30 mninutes of swimming. In five hours the list had shrunk to about 30. LOS ANGELES.
