Although the calibre of the opposi- tion was not especially high, the Iowa squad executed plays with good early- season precision and looped baskets from all angles. Coach Barry twice benched his entire team and sent in the seconds to carry the battle. """lleini"Manush, slu;gin- center fielder of the Detroit Tigers is the sixteenth Detroit player to lead the American league batters in the last 20 seasons. His average for 1926 was .377, as compared with his former averages of .334, .289..303 for the years 1923, 1924, and 1925 respectively. The official batting records of the American league show that the De troit monopoly of batting honors be- gan in 1907 when the immortal Ty Cobb captured first honors and re- tained them with the exception of one year until 1919. George Sisler held the place of honor in 1920 and 1922, Tris Speaker in 1916, and Babe Ruth in 1924. These four players have been the only ones to encroach upon the Tigers' brilliant record.. Barry Heilmann won the laurels in 1921, 1923, and 1925, and Manush in 1926. Two other Detroit outfielders, Ieil- mann and Fothergill, shared honors with Manush by finishing the season among thetfirst four of the league's leading hitters. with Wisconsin March 3, 1925, and since then, 11 consecutive battles have gone to the Hawkeyes. In addition to The Daily, the papers that named all-star teams were the Wis- consin Daily Cardinal, Daily Illini, Daily Jowan, Minnesota Daily, and Chicago .paily Maroon. Four Unanimously Selected Only four men polled a perfect vote, Oosterbaan, Wolverine end; Hess, Ohio guard; Friedman, Wolverine quarterback, and Joesting, Minnesota fullback, being unanimously selected. Under the system adopted Hess was theeonly man able to receive 12 votes, since the Ohio State Lantern did not submit an eleven for consideration. An added point of interest is. that this Ohio star was the only one of the four unanimous choices who was not named for the first team on Grantland Rice's "official" all-American. Despite the fact that Michigan car- ried off the honor of placing two unanimous selections, Coach Wilce's Ohio team came in for its share of honors by placing three men on the eleven, while the Wolverines placed two, Minnesota two, and Illinois two, and Northwestern and Iowa each had one man named. Five of the men named for this all- Conference team were placed on Rice's first team, while it is interesting to note that Shively, Illinois guard, al- lected for one team. None of the last' three were named for the team sub- mitted by their own papers. Reitsch Outstanding Center Reitsch, Illinois, was the outstand- ing center of the season in the Big Ten and was able to poll seven votes, while Klein, Ohio, earned two points, and Rouse, Chicago, was named for the Daily Maroon. The backfield did not present much of problem, only three other men be- ing mentioned, and they were picked for only one team each. Friedman, Michigan, and Joesting, Minnesota, however, were the only men to be! selected on all the teams, while Baker, an "official" all-American, was named on all except the Iowa Daily, who named Gustafson, another Purple star, I I Benny, Oosterbaan Stellar Wolverine end, and captain- elect for the 1927 team, who was a unanimous choice for the wing posi- tion on the all-Conference team picked by The Daily from the elevens sub- mitted by the sporting editors of sit WOLVERINE CAFE We offer you the best food and prices in town.
