"We should not make the church so easy," said the speaker, "and we shouldn't talk so much about religion if we've found contentment in it. Promises are made in political cam- paigns; prate leaders were obliged to promise much booty to their men be- fore an attack; and even military leaders have done that. But the psychology of Jesus was just the op- posite to this, and far greater. "Jesus said, 'if you follow me, you will be dishonored, ridiculed.' He promised nothing except courage, hope, and qualities of character. And they followed Him." In concluding,, Professor Phelps re-, marked that "the only person who can help you is yourself. Your honor is not like a handbag which can be :stolen from you, remember. And, lastly, self pity is the most insidiousj form of self poisoning. It is fatal ." In opening his address, Professor Phelps stated that he would tempor- arily consider himself a member of the University faculty inasmuch as Mich- igan has contributed more professors and scholars to the faculties of other universities than any other institution in the country. Fielding H. Yost, director of intercollegiate athletics, further stated that the entire issue authorized by the Board in Control of Athletics can be sold before the close of the 1926 football season in view of the present demand. Purchasers of the bonds, according to their letters, are afraid that the new stadium will be completely sold out at each of the big home games. This promise is well founded, accord- ing to Coach Yost, who said that it could have been sold out for each of the big games this season. Excavation for and construction of the new stadium is going steadily for- ward, according to CMch Yost. Giant excavators are digging into the side of the hill where the bowl will be- lo- cated. At the same time the concrete columns, which will support the sta- dium, are being erected.
