University Lectures:
Dr. William Minot Guertler, Director of the Metall-Institute der Techni-
schen Hochschule, Charlottenburg, Germany, will deliver two University
lectures on November 1 and 2, respectively. On November 1, Dr. Guertler
will speak on the subject "On the Corrosion Resistance of Steels" at 8:06
p. m. in the Amphitheater of the Chemical Building (Room 165). This was
first delivered at the annual meeting of the American Society for Steel
Treating, September, 1926, as the E. 17. Campbell Memorial Lecture.
On Tuesday, November 2, at 4:00 p. m. in Room 1042, East Engineering
Building, Dr. Guertler will speak on the subject "Systematic Procedure in
Establishing the Limits of the Utilization of New Metal Combinations in
Technical Practice."

University senate:
The fir t regular meeting of the University Senate for the year 1926-1927
will be held in Room C, Law Building, on Monday, November 8, at 8:00 p. m.

Freshman Rhetoric Library Visit:
The Freshman Rhetoric Classes will be shown through the General
Library on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, November 2nd and 3rd, from
'7 to 7:45. All groups will start from the Circulation Corridor.
The Classes of Messrs. Van der Lugt, Bouwsma, Schenk, Abbot, Bink-
ley, Conrad, Bader, Kreider and Morris are scheduled for Tuesday evening;
and those of Messrs. Proctor, Hanawalt, Bower, Scott, Solve,. Gates and
Wells, for Wednesday evening.

Freshmen Women:
The first required hygiene Lecture will be November 1st, at 4:15 in
Sarah Caswell Angell Hall. Bring blue books.

Professor John S. Worley will lecture in Room 411, West Engineering
Building at 9 A. M. Monday, November 1st, and 9 A. M. Tuesday, November
2nd, on Transportation, these being the first lectures of a course extending
throughout the year. Two lectures per month will be given. All members
of the senior Civil Engineering class are requested to attend. Classes in all
Civil Engineering subjects scheduled at these hours will be dismissed.
Students taking work in other departments at these hours must arrange for
excuse in the usual manner, if they desire to attend.

Public Lecture:
Philip Marshall Brown, professor of International Law at Princeton
University, will lecture in Natural Science Auditorium at 4:15 P. M., Mon-
day, November 1, on "The Lausanne Treaty and Our Relations with the
Near East."
This is the first of a series of public lectures given under the auspices
of the School of Religion seminar on Moral Issues of Modern Life.
The public is cordially invited.

The Economics Club meets Monday evening, November 1, at 7:45 in
Room 304 of the Michigan Union. Professor Watkins will speak on "Effect
of Federal Reserve System on Bankers' Balances." All faculty members
and graduate students in Economics and Business Administration are invited.

There will be a meeting of the club in Lane Hall at three o'clock Sun-
day afternoon. The subject for discussion is "Why do what Romans do
when you are in Rome?"

Women's Golf Classes:
Mrs. Stewart Hanley, Detroit, District Golf Champion, will be here all
day Monday, November 1, to coach golf. Students in Tuesday and Thurs-
day golf classes come Monday during vacant hours for coaching by Mrs.
Hanley. Classes meet on University Golf Course, in case of rain come to
Barbour Gymnasium. Any students who play golf are invited to attend.

Graduate Students in Chemical Engineering:
The usual monthly luncheon of the Staff and Graduate Students in
Chemical Engineering will be held in the Seminar room, East Engineering
Building, 'Tuesday, November 2.

Prospective Teachers:
r The annual meeting for registration with the Bureau of Appointments \
will be held in the Auditorium of Newberry Hall, Saturday, November 6
at 10 a. tn. Seniors and graduate students who desire the services of the
Bureau for the second semester or for next fall are expected to attend this
meeting. Persons who wish to enroll with the Bureau for the sake of hav-
ing their records on file but who do not anticipate teaching next year are

also asked to be present at this meeting.

Collegiate Conference Today:
The thirty delegates chosen from the University of Michigan to attend
the State Older Boys Conference at Jackson will meet Sunday morning at
10 o'clock at Lane hall for the first pre-conference meeting of college
leaders.
Mr. A. J. Gregg, student work secretary of the national Y. M. C. A.
council, will be the speaker. The meeting will be attended by delegates
from other colleges in the state.

During this week-end, and for about a week following, there will be an
exhibiticn of chrysanthemums at the Botanical Gardens of the University.
Ti greenhouses are open during daylight hours, including Sundays, and
visitors are welcome.

Phillips Scholarships:
Competitive examinations for the Phillips Scholarships in Latin and
Greek will be held in November, at a date to be announced later.
Freshmen in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts who have
adequate high school preparation in Latin alone or in both Latin and Greek
are eligible to compete. The regulations by which the award of these
scholarships is governed are fully described on pages .171-172 of the last
General Catalogue of the University.
Applicants should at once give notice of their intention to compete by a
written statement, which may be handed in at the office of Dean Effinger
or given to any instructor in the Departments of Latin and Greek.
