rRIDAY, OCTO$ER.. 22, 1926 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGIVE N I I. k ' a ft ;r P't a"=arm-:: , ~ r7m 4~' JUNIOR PROGRAM ENDS CONVENTION Women's Clubs Delegates View Play 1iy Highland Park Members As Session Closes RANKIN GIVES ADDRESS As a most fitting climax for the Federation of Women's clubs conven- t on which has been held in Ann Arbor fr the past three days, a pageant given by Junior members of the Fed- eration of Women's clubs of Highland Park was presented in Pattengill audi- torium, last night. The pageant, "Pathways," by Anne Little Brandes of Detroit, depicted the need of the youth for the older woman and of the maturer years for youth. Using as the illustration of passing years the choice of flowers to be woven into garlands, the Girl wove the varied brilliant flowers into her garland while Woman wove thetpaler, faded flowers into hers. Girl used as her assistants, Enthusiasm, Loyalty, Tolerance, Beauty, Rythm and Folk Lore, while Woman had Power, Duty, Charity and Culture as her helpers. Eventually through Womanhood, thel generations came to a better under- standing of their need for each other, and combined the usefulness of their different helpers, so that they lead to a deeper appreciation of each other and the necessity of an understanding cooperation. The pageant was splendidly pre- sented under the direction of able in- structors and the costuming and lighting effects were especially fine. The production displayed much hard and loyal work on the part of the participants. Following the pageant, Prof. T. E. Rankin of the rhetoric department spoke on "Books worthy of Shelf Space." According to Mr. Rankin the American people are too prone to read the light fiction of the day which has} material and length but no depth. Books are, in his opinion tihe inspirers of civilization and the readers are therefore the creators of it. To carry out the idea of his announced subject, Mr. Rankin outlined a number of the books he thought to be the most im- portant on a cultural shelf. This meeting was the last evening session of the convention, the remain- ing sessions being only the ones to be held this morning. Subscribe for the Michigan Daily.
